When they couldn’t win either NKU game and lost to James Madison, Green Bay and at home vs CMU it pretty much said this isn’t a championship caliber team. It basically showed you that they can beat almost any team on schedule but lose to anybody on schedule. Also, the not being able to put a winning streak together by now is a sign that they are what you think they are, a average at best MAC team.

I agree with your logic

I also believe they have the talent to be the 2 seed in the MAC tourney. I feel however that they lack toughness to become that. I believe they are a extension of Monty. To me as a head coach Monty’s no.1 problem is he’s soft as a leader. He will yell and throw his hands up but anyone who is around the bench will see that many players ignore and talk back to him. My guess is their practices are soft. My guess is Monty doesn’t run them into the ground when they screw up. Ask anyone what they think of Monty and they’ll say good guy. You can be a good guy and great leader but it’s obvious he’s only one of them.

+1

Yep. Porter and Wilson were the inmates running the asylum not too long ago. Nader before that.

I agree, they are soft both physically and mentally. I’d point to that as why it’s rare they finish close games vs teams with similar (or less) talent.

Last Tuesday was an anomaly.

You look at the overall stats, and NIU looks like a nicely balanced team, but that's not how it plays out in games. You'll have 5 minutes where the offense is German and only German, but Thorpe, Bradley, and the inside game disappear. And then Thorpe will take over for 5 min, and then Bradley, after being shy and barely touching the ball for 15 min, will all of the sudden hit some shots. It's just odd. I'd like to say Monty could find a way in the next month to get a little more consistent cohesion going, but history would tell us that won't happen.
Our offense is completely free form. You may have some play action on the first pass then it is every man for themselves. It has been that way for six years, why do we expect it to change now. Shall we talk about basketball fundamentals next?

These are good points about the offense. One thing I find odd about this team, is you could watch them play 20 times and feel like you have seen them only play 2 or 3 times. Nothing to hang your hat on, no identity, just an element of randomness as discussed.

In terms of KenPom actually increasing NIU's ranking after Akron, I think it is a combination of what other teams are doing around them, and NIU significantly increasing its defensive metrics which nudged them upward.

RE: mbb @ Akron
Here is my MAC power ranks through Saturday's games along with projected seed of each team

1. Buffalo, 1 seed
2. Toledo, 3 seed
3. Ball State, 6 seed
4. Kent State, 4 seed
5. Bowling Green, 2 seed
6. Central Michigan, 7 seed
7. Northern Illinois, 5 seed
8. Miami-OH, 8 seed
9. Ohio, 9 seed
10. Akron, 10 seed
11. Eastern Michigan, 11 seed
12. Western Michigan, 12 seed

I currently have NIU with the easiest remaining schedule of any MAC team. Akron with the most difficult remaining.

I disagree with the assessment that this team isn't tough, we've seen them battle back in many games (I'm not saying Monty deserves credit for it). But most of the other critiques, yes. But I'll also easily put on some optimistic glasses like ChicagoHuskie, I could see this team making a deep run into the MAC tourney.
