RE: WBB Weekly thread 1/20/2019
These stats tell something, but I'm not sure what....
Buffalo 24 second-chance points (NIU got 13)
Buffalo 44 points in the paint (NIU 18)
Buffalo 22 fastbreak points (NIU 11)
Buffalo 53 rebounds (NIU 41)
Buffalo 46.7 % shooting ( NIU 30.9)

This is just a one-game snapshot, but several times, Buffalo got "free" points because nobody from Northern got back on defense. At all. The Bull with the ball was down there all by her lonesome. With this group, maybe Northern needs to pass the ball around more to set up a good shot. Lot of shots seemed rushed. Just some thoughts.

Mikayla Voigt got 26 pts. (1,516 career pts.) Next was Ally May with 10.

Carlson has never had her teams play defense. While they may score a lot they also tend to give up just as many.

This is a true statement at NIU. Prior to that her teams played “some defense.

What better way to recruit to Dekalb than have an offensive mindset? It’s a great concept but they have to be able to get stops now and then. They had a one of a kind player in Lehman. Since then it’s been strictly offense.

They deserve more accolades and media coverage but they also deserve more fan support.
Congratulations to the ladies for overcoming the loss to injury of one of their really good players

My understanding from several clinics I've been lucky to attend over the years is that the run-and-gun is supposed to be a defense with an offense tacked on. No defense, and it's just grab what you can and shoot when you can. If you're not hot, you lose.

You guys hit it square on about the recruiting. Maybe scouting needs to set finding good defenders who are willing to mix it in the paint as the priority. And an asst. coach who knows the intricacies of teaching defense (no, I do not know the backgrounds or qualifications of the staff) can dedicate the time. The time to start working on the sophs' defense is now. They will be with the program next year too.
