Yeah it was a package deal.. As for the why they bought AOL, there are still a large contingent of people who use it for small items.

Every time I call into directv, they try to get me to switch (since they are now owned by AT&T), and I always shrug them off because it's not worth the time. Perhaps I should call back in and entertain their offers. I know one benefit is $15/month off directv for life. If they pay off my phone too (I've heard that's common), it would be a no brainer.

There are people who are still using AOL strictly for address books and emails.

Look at the headers of many of the spam emails you get (even if it says it's coming from somewhere else). A LOT of them are still coming from AOL accounts, so there are people out there who are still paying for AOL due to the amount of emails and addresses they can have access to.
