I will say that while i don't have too much sympathy for these guys, I do think that some of them are getting screwed with their not getting their "paid time off" claims.

There was a reason you accrued it, (even if it was "use it or lose it")and to have it pulled out from under you kinda bites.

I could get it if they were fired for non-performance, but as these are company layoffs and yes, I know it varies by state, and may have been written in their job descriptions), it seems like BuzzFeed would have to pay this out to at least those in the states where it's mandatory to be paid in such a situation.

That's one reason a lot of companies pick specific months to perform layoffs, because the accrued numbers would be at their smallest numbers. (depending on where their fiscal years start/end)).
