#NIU OT Max Scharping's footwork is still way too panicky/reactionary. Overreacts to the pass rusher's movements and needlessly compromises his own balance and ability to respond. #SeniorBowl

Kaleb McGary and Max Scharping did a very nice job on OL in 1v1s for the North. L.J. Collier winning inside and out for the DL

Replying to @LownesMatthew @MelKiperESPN

Watch the North’s roster at the Senior Bowl, because there are a couple of guys like Kaleb McGary, RT, Washington (late 2nd early 3rd Rounder) and Max Scharping, OT/OG, Northern Illinois (3rd Rounder) that are good fits in power gap of inside zone schemes.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like Sutton Smith is having a great week of practice thus far, but I have no doubt he shows out in the game

Sutton Smith, N Ill, another edge player in college practicing with the off ball LBs. At his size it’s probably the best option.

Moving well in the drills and taking to it quickly.

It hasn’t been a great week for Sutton Smith rushing off the edge. Dalton Risner put him on the ground during today’s practice #SeniorBowl (video)

It's pretty clear Sutton Smith needs to add some weight but his game is about speed and quickness. Struggling so far in Senior Bowl 1-1 battles because he needs space to create the rush. Tight quarters puts him at a disadvantage. That slightly wide outside alignment helps a ton.

Sutton Smith is a productive as hell pass rusher, but at 6'0", 234 lbs and with only 30 5/8" arms he's fighting three up-hill battles. Needs to really impress in practices this week.

I hope Max is still around when Bears draft in 3rd round. Massie might not be back (free agent), he would look good on the right side.

Looks like Max is helping his draft stock this week!

Sutton, on the other hand, is proving all of the doubters right thus far.

I think Sutton is going to turn some heads when the game starts. Like one of the posts above said, tight quarters pass pro goes against his strength (not to mention he was held horribly in one of those videos). He’s going to be fine IMO

RE: Updates on Sutton and Max @ The Senior Bowl
People put way too much stock in practice evaluation. Seen way too many times players overrated or undervalued because of it. In one instance (high school), a scout who declared one player better never made it to college and the one he declared worse plays in a major 4 league today.

RE: Updates on Sutton and Max @ The Senior Bowl
I posted this in another thread. Eval by ESPN on Sutton and listed as player that stood out.

Sutton Smith, an edge rusher out of Northern Illinois with 24.5 TFL and 15 sacks on the season, doesn't have the frame (6-0, 234) to play defensive end or 3-4 OLB in the NFL, and needs to show teams he can play off the line. He helped himself in that regard during one-on-ones with the running backs. He didn't always win, but he was competitive by showing good speed and change-of-direction skills.

RE: Updates on Sutton and Max @ The Senior Bowl
Sutton lost his footing on one practice rep and was held on another. Hardly reason to forget his college career performances. So, the guy making such harsh "evaluations" is ridiculous.

That last evaluation is more realistic.

Heknoes it is an uphill battle-- who doesn;t have an uphill battle? It's the NFL. Noone is going to give you anything. YOu have to earn it.

RE: Updates on Sutton and Max @ The Senior Bowl
I know we all love Sutton in the scheme we played at NIU. He also had a solid player on the opposite side of him as well as some solid LB play in the middle.

However, he is too undersized for the line in the NFL and has not had enough time at the LB space to be prepared for a transition. He may not get drafted and may be on a development squad or at least play special teams.

Can he play in the NFL is yet to be determined. But, I wish him the best going forward. It would be great to see him at least get a shot.

Max will do well.

RE: Updates on Sutton and Max @ The Senior Bowl
Yeah, when Sutton is probably going up against guys who weigh 340 and are freakish athletes, he's going to be at a disadvantage going straight up against them. That's why he needs to be a LB and play off the ball. I can't see him adding 30-40 more pounds without compromising his quickness. He already gained 40 since his freshman year.

NIU32.......great recap. Thanks for your efforts!

So, Sutton is working with the LB's? I watched the past two days recap and couldn't find him on the field but was looking for him with the DE's.

Knew Max would stand out right away. Also with Sutton: I’m sure he’ll stand out in the game. This is his 3rd position in the last 4 years. They can’t block him without holding him.

There are multiple videos on Twitter showing Sutton being eaten alive over and over again by different tackles. Scouts are even saying that he may be too small to play OLB. Should be an interesting follow through draft season.

RE: Updates on Sutton and Max @ The Senior Bowl
The best thing for Smith is to not be drafted. He can then pick a team to try out for after reviewing their roster. With his speed, he could be a gunner on punt returns and become a special teams Ace. Linebacker is his best option. He has very little experience dropping back in coverage, can he do that? Does he have the hip swivel!!! (love to use made up football terms)

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again....

Safety.

HS to D1 is a big leap.

D1 to NFL even more.

He's quick but I don't think he is NFL safety quick. OLB is still going to be his calling card, I think.

Yeah...I just remember him catching up to a RB from behind after a 30 yard gain. And his lateral speed sideline to sideline looks great.

Hope OLB works out. His height does him no favors.

Only half joking here...there's always RB/FB. If he ends up in NE he's the type of guy Belichek could do something with.
