(01-21-2019 02:58 PM)MidWestMidMajor Wrote:  I’ve always thought that Univ Colorado - Colorado Springs would be a good school for the WAC. They are different from most d2 schools in that that have an exceptionally strong engineering program (due to connections with Hewlett Packard and local defense industry contractors), were identified by the state regents as “The Growth Campus” of the CU system, have seen strong increases in enrollment (currently about 12,500) and construction of many new buildings in recent years. In other words, they are an ambitious institution. For many schools, going to d1 athletics is part of a strategy to elevate the profile of the university. Going d1 would distinguish them from the other state schools in d2 (Pueblo, Mesa, Adams, Ft. Lewis, etc.).

Do they have the money? Based on visits to Colorado Springs, I’d say they could find some in a metro area of 700,000. They are a non-football school (which fits the WAC). They recently built good fields. Their gym is small (but.. UMKC..?) They have 14 teams (6 men / 8 women), meeting d1 requirements. Their mix of sports fits the WAC. They finished #35 in the Learfield Cup standings last year out of 268 d2 schools (and are currently #12). Colorado Springs might be a crowded marketplace with the Air Force Academy and Colorado College d1 hockey. But the reason schools go d1 is based on elevating the institution not making money on ticket sales. And I think UC-CS could elevate the status of the WAC more than Colo Mesa or Pueblo State. I mean, UCCS is the home of "The National Institute for Science, Space and Security Centers". How cool is that?

I’m not saying today or tomorrow. But it seems UCCS is an ambitious school. And that’s what it takes to move up to d1.

Thanks for the info about them. I've never heard of them and decided to look them up. LY men's basketball only averaged 352 fans/game! That might even be less than Chicago St! I went to a D2 school and we averaged around 2k, which tended to be top 25 nationally. Idk how much it would matter but I would have to imagine their attendance would have to go up before it's considered for NCAA D1. Cal Baptist averaged over 2000 in past years I remember seeing somewhere.

WAC is always looking for new blood, and I feel this school would be one to look out for the next 5-10 years!

A lot of WAC schools are new to D1 so are still looking for rivals at this level. Any school nearby will help form a rivalry since the WAC is so spread out and schools mostly isolated from each other.

Uvu is a perfect example that. Their unusual path to D1 means they don't really have any potential rivals from their history, so Dixie works well for a lot of reasons. And from Utah population being centered up north, I'm sure a fair number of DSU students come from closer to Ogden, so an away game road trip could also be a weekend home.

Welcome, Todor. We are thrilled to have you.

Runner, c'mon. He's an NMSU fan. And as we know, all NMSU fans on this board are cordial, polite, don't start fights...scratch, that...maybe we should wait a while.

Yup. I think they'll find another D-II move up in a few years as well (no speculation here on who). They are getting a good core, and Dixie will be part of that. Good add, they will be a competitive program for the WAC, no question. Good luck Trailblazers!

Its amazing what this conference has done with not only staying alive, but their recent/current place in the conference RPI ranks.

And, STILL....people around various boards here and there seem to think the WAC is on its last leg! The conference has value even outside its members as a launch pad for Western DII schools willing to make the jump, if for no other reason.

Pretty much why I am frustrated CSUB is leaving the conference. I think the Runners have a greater national presence in the WAC than it will have in the Big West; The California bus league. CSUB is too similar to the other Big West school... Cal State take-your-pick. In the WAC CSUB has an identity separate from NMSU, GCU, Seattle, Utah Valley...etc.

I'd rather have most of the D2 Cal States than Bakersfield. Chico St, CSLA, SFS, etc

Again, love the Dixie State addition to the WAC! Need two more western teams and I think the WAC will be set for quite awhile, although I feel pretty good about it right now with the addition of Dixie. I'm also pretty confident about Metro State. It seems every single time a school does a feasibility study it results in a move up. Did Tarleton State actually do a feasibility study yet?

This was their updated one from March 2018.

Still waiting on the results of MSU Denver’s study.
Does playing Dixie State in football when they are in transition mode count as a Division 1 win toward bowl eligibility? If so, they could easily pick up a couple body bag games against Power 5 schools every year (in addition to the Big Sky home and homes).

It counts I assume, all the recent D2 moves up of the 2010s have played FBS teams from the start

RE: Dixie St Joins the WAC in 2020.
CWU has spent $10 million for a new track and field facility, removing it from their football stadium. Strange for a DII school that plays in a vastly depleted football league -the GNAC -so it appears they want to join Dixie St. A tweet from a journalist last spring said a bid in 2020 was likely.

But their sports mix isn’t right yet, as they sponsor rodeo, and they need to get another.

New T&F field, GNAC, rodeo, journalist tweet...you are right. They are exactly Dixie State and will join them. Connecting the dots was easy on this one. 03-zzz

Obviously you did not read the article carefully. The $10.4 was for multiple projects including the stadium upgrade, the new Track and field facility and related projects. I would have been really surprised if they spent that much on T&F.

Try to be more accurate next time and people may pay more attention.

The student paper endorses a move to DI and FCS and Dixie St is mentioned a lot, as they used to play fb in the GNAC.

https://cwuobserver.com/12487/sports/opi...-the-gnac/

BTW, the paper says $6 million of the ten were spent on Tomlinson Field improvements.

CWU will be trying to get a Big Sky or WAC invite. I believe with Eastern in the Sky they will end up in the WAC.

And like Dixie State for southern Big Sky Members, a FCS independent, WAC other sports CWU would have no problem getting the northern Big Sky teams to play them OOC. (Plus Dixie State, of course)
