Pope was an assistant under Rose at BYU for 3-4 years before taking the UVU job, right?

He was. Coming off his success as head coach at UVU, he is perfectly positioned to take the BYU job.

That is why I said "as of today". Pope is a candidate for the BYU jobs but he is still the UVU coach. Who knows who will come knocking on Jans door in the offseason. Then there is still a lot of recruiting to be done. And, as usual there is a almost always a surprise transfer who leave a WAC program. So far, UMKC has taken the biggest hit. But they can have a major upswing if they hire the right coach.

He's never even made it to the wac championship game.

He has turned UVU into a top 100 program. He is 48-21 over the past two seasons. He was an assistant at BYU for 4 seasons. His UVU team beat BYU on the road in 2016. Pope played in the NBA. Pope played for Rick Pitino at Kentucky. His wife’s father was head coach at Utah and an assistant at BYU. Pope is Mormon. I think he checks all of the boxes.

Mark Pope has done a good job turning UVU into like a top 150 program. But he's failed to make the WAC tournament final for the 6 years they've been in the WAC, and 3/6 years they've been a 1-2 seed.

UVU had a Net Ranking of 90 this season. They had an RPI ranking of 68. In 2017-2018, UVU had an RPI ranking of 89. He has had two consecutive seasons in the top 100. In four seasons he has turned them into a top 100 program. He has not been coaching there for six seasons.

UVU is a mid-major with a basketball budget of $1.86 million. BYU had a basketball budget of $7.7 million. GCU has a basketball budget of $5.3 million. Utah State has a budget of $3.4 million. Utah a budget of $9.7 million. This is what he is competing against at UVU. He has put together a roster of transfers and walk-ons to become a top 100 program.

Pope will have more trouble getting these same type of kids at BYU due to how much tougher academic admission is than UVU. Plus you have to deal with the honor code. I think Pope will be fine if he takes it but for all the great he has done at UVU I'm thinking this might be the ceiling at UVU with NMSU GCU SU and now CBU all have bigger budgets and have clear advantages over UVU in basketball.

I can't think of a better candidate for BYU. And for a Mormon, BYU is always the dream job.

BYU gets lots of their kids without even trying too hard. That's just where they were always going to go.

UMKC vs Chicago St in the WAC tournament Final Next year. 7 vs 8 seed final. NMSU wins league title. Those are my only predictions
