Everyone was saying Seattle would contend this year, so I'm not sure I agree with this statement.
Exactly, seemed everyone was high on them on preseason and ooc play.
Yeah, I think everyone here thought Seattle U had the talent to contend right away. The Redhawks have just been hit with injuries and early defections.
You all need to think about this logically.
SU played a 6 man rotation last year and was an injury away from disaster. It never happened.
Same situation this year. Hayford knows it. He subs literally the least amount of any D1 school in Nov Dec because of it. But then between conference play and literally in last OOC game, you have injuries hit hard and fast. So far now we're at:
Kavas miss 4-6 weeks
Grigsby miss 2-3
Means play through eye injury
Myles Carter forced to play first 3 WAC games hurt
Delante Jones missing games with leg
(Thats 4/5 starting line up)
Aaron Nettles, 6 man, miss time
Hopkins and Rip Economou miss games with flu
This team has two guys on the bench who have ever played a D1 game. The rest are JUCO transfers and freshman. Part of rebuilding a roster
Seattle U was only as strong as their starting lineup. That's gone now and won't he back till end of February. Played vs UMKC without 4 of main 7 guys. Played more walk ons vs Chicago State than scholarship guys.
Next year, even if Kavas leaves as GT, Hayford will use open scholarships for two more grad transfers. Depth gets another year younger, 9-10 wins. We all thought SU would be good and most of the time us, myself included, failed to account for a logical hole in the team. 1 injury away from disaster as there is no experience at all on the bench (let alone Hayford didn't play them in OOC to get any). But we also were shooting for 2019-20 when this roster all come back another year older and with help.
Look at the SU WAC-only stats I posted above. It's tragic how bad this has gotten
