That make sense since---really, there isnt much population west of San Antonio anyway. UTEP is the only Texas based FBS team in that area--and they struggle to recruit to that area. Basically, the only conferences centered west of San Antonio are the MW and Pac12. Would ULL join the MW if they invited them? Interesting question. If ULL was invited I suspect it would have to be part of a 4 team expansion--something like N Texas, Rice, LaTech, and ULL. Those 4 would likely pair with Air Force, Colorado St, Wyoming, and New Mexico to be the east division of the MW. The TV exposure would likley be similar to what they have now---earning abut 1.5-2 million a year on ESPN, CBS-Sports, and some streaming outlet (Probably STADIUM of ESPN+). In that scenario---I bet ULL would make the move.

While that would be a possibility, it would have to include Houston, SMU and LaTurd/stAte for Louisiana to make a move. I’m just relating how I’ve heard our administration feels at this time.

It would have to pay $5-7M per team to even justify the travel.

If you're waiting on that scenario I think you'll be waiting a long time. If Big 12 expands Houston will surely be a part of it. They are preparing for it by pouring tons of cash into the program and benefit from having a billionaire on the BOT to foot the bill. I think the group would likely be: A State, La Tech, Louisiana, NMSU, Rice, SMU, Texas State, Tulsa, ULM, UNT, UTEP, UTSA.

I’m not waiting for any scenario. I want Louisiana to be the very best we can be. We have a few more steps to go to get there. If we can do all of that then I don’t care where we are. We will be a top 5 G5 athletic department. If that’s in the SBC, CUSA, AAC or any other league I don’t care.

Fair enough. I just think Houston isn't going to be around the G5 ranks much longer.

I can see a day coming when football is completely separated with their own conferences. I don't think so, but it may be an advantage for Syracuse and Pittsburgh to be in the ACC for football, but it's foolish for them to be there for basketball and all other sports. Baseball is huge at Clemson, but I doubt their folks are going to knock the gates down for that big weekend series with Syracuse or Pittsburgh. It makes no sense for conferences to have 18 teams for all these other sports.

Makes no sense on a G5 level but P5 conferences are making so much money from football they can cover the cost. If P5 money ever falls though they're in bigtime trouble.

You simply can't ignore the fact that you guys have some extremely dead weight in your conference with some schools that should never have been added. I think you'll soon see Memphis being a participant in an airport meeting that'll result in you guys leaving the AAC and ditching all that dead weight.

5 million is what the BE pays and 2 million is what the AAC pays....

I'm saying that making an extra 3 million per year after paying an exit and entrance fee isn't going to fix UConn's problems.

I'd rather have Tulane over La Tech...nothing personal.

If I had to guess about our next contract I'd say the AAC sticks with ESPN and we extend until 2026...6 years, 50 million per year, 4.16 million per team. (thanks to Houston and UCF Access Bowl runs and UConn's titles in Men's and Women's hoops)
None of this is personal. It's ALL business. I never said otherwise That's why the P5 is doing to us what they're doing to us. You guys in the AAC may be the reigning champs of the tallest midget leagues and we plan to keep it that way, but like the rest of us, you're still midgets in the world of college athletics. I feel Memphis is in a FAR better position in the AAC than we ever were in CUSA...

This likely all ends with either two separate divisions, or with the P5 going its separate way entirely. I don't agree... Either way, we're all going to be relegated to becoming 2nd class citizens in the world of college sports. again, I don't agree That's when common sense will eventually win out and we'll see some regional realigning of G5 conferences. When the money drys up, we'll have no other choice.

A far better position for now, but eventually, reality will sink in and even dreamers like yourself will come to terms with the fact that you simply didn't make the cut. You were left out of the big boys party just like every other G5 program was. Your home is the G5 now. Get used to it.

you know the whole 'P6' thing is simple marketing, right? and it works...

the upcoming TV contract will be interesting because the AAC took a low dollar amount high on exposure all because of the money left behind...we could live on that for 5-6 years...now we need to cash in Houston and UCF's Access Bowls coupled with UConn's men's/women's NCAA titles to get a deal that pays well.

Memphis went from playing USM, UAB, Rice, etc in CUSA to having hoops powers like UConn, Cincy, Houston, WSU, Temple, etc to play game in and game out...and we didn't have to pay a penny to leave CUSA. It worked out for Memphis.

Ha

Dumbest part of the entire article. Louisiana has a top 5 group of 5 coaching salary pool. Yet the author pics on the two schools in the SBC, instead of looking at LaTurd who is bleeding themselves dry.

His proposal for teams that should move down seems to focus solely on revenue and market factors. He really doesn't seem to account for historical success / competitiveness at all. His article is little more than just another "cool alignment possibilities" message board post. It's just prettied up a little to make it look like an article.

Lol, I'm fine with click-baity columns like this in the off season. Gives us something to talk about.

Wonder how many other schools are realistically looking at the finances of FBS football and athletics as a whole.

https://www.sbnation.com/college-footbal...ll-aac-fcs

This has me wondering if the AAC is going to struggle in the long term? Their schools are spending at a much higher rate than the rest of the G5 (except possibly a few MWC teams), but their payouts even including TV aren't that much more. I'm sure some of the top schools like Houston, Memphis, and UCF can make it work, but how long will the others be able to keep up? Travel costs, salaries, and facility costs are growing much fast in that league than all of the others.

You can find the information on their budgeting. Since Compher took over at ECU, the athletics department went from have a $3 mm surplus to a $3 mm deficit. He also fired Ruffin McNeil and hired Montgomery.

That move with Compher also coincided with joining the AAC so it may have something to do with the conference, however expenditures for former C-USA members shouldn't be that much more because they are essentially a part of the same conference as before. However it could be that there is an arms race of sorts and some programs are spending themselves into oblivion to keep up. The better approach, in my opinion, is winning and building as funding is available rather than going into debt to do so.

Perhaps, but you’re still nothing more than a G5 program. Like the rest of us, Memphis will struggle to maintain any relevance at all in FBS football. You guys are just going to struggle a little longer than we did before you finally accept the fate that the P5 conferences dealt us all.

Memphis came close with the Big East invite and all, but the creation of the P5 destroyed that dream. I can understand how much it must hurt to know you got so close, only to be dumped once again. It must have been devastating to at the time.

I realize you guys like your “P6” marketing, it has pushed you guys slightly above the other G5 conferences in the eyes of the media.

But ultimately you guys were playing Cincy, Louisville, UAb and even Houston before realignment hit. Conference USA 1.0 would have been a really good conference.

This guys criteria are not very thought out. It would be easy enough to do a financial analysis to determine if the costs outweigh the benefits for any time horizon that he wanted to choose.
