UConn sports loses $40M in 2018
Wonder how long UConn will continue to play football at the FBS level. Surprising to see a traditional power in both men's and women's basketball losing money in the sport.
"Football lost $8.7 million, men's basketball $5 million and women's basketball, a perennial power, had expenses that outpaced revenues by more than $3 million."

Football I can sorta see
Men's Bball....meh sounds a little fishy
Women's Bball....If they are losing money either someone can't do simple math or they're skimming from the top.
It all adds up to a scam a la UAB 2014 and beyond

Yeah... from the naked eye it says... “Football is too expensive and basketball could be saved in a basketball conference.” This sounds like just the excuse needed to join Big East.

In a different article, I remember seeing that costs of tuition is included. That didn't make up all of the difference between being in the black vs the red in finances, but it was a significant chunk of football costs. We all know that the advertised cost of tuition doesn't match the actual cost of hiring faculty and having available classroom space. Not giving the athletes classes to go to and teachers to grade them wouldn't suddenly free up $millions or allow them to have more students paying full tuition.

There is no national auditing standard for such programs as collegiate football. Could anyone imagine such an independent / outside audit of the two P5 football programs in Alabama? In this state, it is like the character in "High Plains Drifter" who said "Whatever you say is just fine with me".

I was shocked that their budget was over $80m. It looks like there must be some serious waste in that athletic department. They are over $20m higher than the next AAC team (UC) - Memphis only spent $49m.
They are not getting a good return on their investment - at least not in FB and MBB.
I think their budget problems will not improve if they leave for the Big East and either drop FB or go Indy.

Wait, what? It's called the GAGAS. All schools are audited. Both because it's required for public record and because they have banks that require it. All schools are audited, it's just that they'll typically report at a consolidated level. Especially at UAB's level where you're looking at ~$2B in revenue and the athletic department is only $30MM of that.

Joining the AAC won't solve all of our problems, but it will help with one... Basketball SOS

The AAC would not be P5 money, but it would be better than what we're getting now. We'll also gain the benefits of a nice stadium where we get a cut of the parking and concessions. UConn also has a much different attitude regarding college football than we have in Birmingham.

Are you saying that there will have to be more defections before UAB would be able to join? Or UAB in (AAC - UConn) ~ C-USA ?

I think it will take more than UConn leaving. Probably be after UC, Memphis, Houston and UCF leave. Or at least a couple from that group.

My 2 Cents... if all of them leave... not worth joining.

I think at that point the best thing to do would be for the G5 conferences to realign based on geography. At least CUSA, the Belt and the AAC.

The 3 teams that I want to be in the AAC if we were to get the nod would be UCF, Memphis, and UC for nostalgia reasons. I would want to keep UCONN for our women's basketball of course.
But I agree that it will be till those teams leave before anyone will get an invite and at that point it would be pointless to join.

RE: UConn sports loses $40M in 2018
Disagree with any scenario that has UAB remaining in C-USA or some merged monstrosity long-term.
THIS version of UAB does not belong in C-USA. These aren't our peer schools, as we ourselves define in our Master Plan. Definitely not academically.
Case in point, a school that's usually brought up in AAC discussions, ODU. Their budget is larger and they are rebuilding their stadium and enlarging it...by 1,000 seats to 20-21K. We average more now than their new expanded stadium will hold and we're building a 45K seat stadium of our own. There are college basketball arenas bigger than Charlotte and WKU's football stadiums, and those are big enough for MTSU, FAU, and FIU's crowds (even when their teams are good).
At the legendary Meeting, it was agreed that we would only bring football back if we did it right this time. Well, Birmingham and UAB doing college football right is just a bigger scale than C-USA. Two seasons back from death and our coach is the highest paid in the league.
We are a world-class university in the number one market for college football. The AAC doesn't have to be our only option.

I agree that the AAC isn't our only option I was just pointing out that I wouldn't want to join that conference with those teams gone. Doesn't mean I want to stay in CUSA. How great would it be to jump all the AAC schools and get into a bigger conference like the Big 12. Of course a lot of people are saying the Big 12 will be no more after the next realignment so we will just have to see where things go. Going to be an interesting ride for the next few years to see how all these conferences shake out.
