Childers went from a freshman who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn to a sophomore who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.

Both years he had one hand tied behind his back, and that was coach Carey

All too often Childers got confused and thought he was playing basketball. A bounce pass is not a successful football play. Doubt if that was a coaching failure.

Childers did play an excellent game when it counted most, lets see if he can play at a high level consistently next year. Perhaps a new QB coach can help.
I thought he played relatively decent in the bowl game too.

He’s progressed, but not enough given how much playing time he’s had over the past few years. Hopefully a new system will help or bring some healthy competition. Anything will be better than Coach U’s offense.

RE: QB Shootout at the OK Corral?
I am really hoping that some of the incoming freshmen are ready to play as true freshman. We need someone who can separate from defenders. Wesley was probably are fastest WR. Tears and others I do not consider fast. Childers, at times, had very few options and he is not a runner like Lynch or Harnish.

I heard this term yesterday in regards to Drew Brees’ Game vs the Rams. He made his “maintenance throws” but was bad when it came time to make the big play. To me that’s Childers in a nut shell. He almost never makes a big play with his arm but comes away with a decent game. The crossing route to Brinkman under pressure in the MACC was a big time throw. I honestly can’t recall any other throws in his two years that I went “wow” on. My #1 problem with Childers....he doesn’t make plays. I know his receivers suck. But a good qb still makes those throws. Brinkman was blanketed on that play. That was part of the reason it was a wow play.

We definitely need a QB coach. And certainly the WRs didn't help him out for most of the year. Really hoping Tears can continue playing like he did in the MACC game.

I think I would be more inclined to be okay with him as a “game manager” if he did a better job avoiding negative plays. 10 picks in 400 pass attempts isn’t bad, but when it only comes along with 15 TDs it’s not particularly good either. Plus, as has been talked about before, he was just terrible under pressure.

If he can take a little better care of the ball, be better under pressure, and make a few more plays, all of a sudden he’s pretty decent. I don’t think he has to make THAT big of jump any of those areas, so it’s not impossible. However, he’s also 662 pass attempts into his career, so he’s not exactly inexperienced.

On the flip side, Harnish made a giant leap after his Sophomore season (granted, he had only thrown 434 passes and almost every stat other than TD/INT was better than childers) so who knows.

The new OC has a massive track record of success. SDSU’s most recent QB was a 2 time FCS Heisman finalist.

Yea, and he was the QB coach as well as OC at SDSU.

RE: QB Shootout at the OK Corral?
I noticed the SDSU qb did do some running himself. Not as much as Childers, only about 6 carries a game last year to Childers 14. So it looks like that will remain in the offense, but at a much more reasonable rate. 6 - 8 carries is all Childers should have.

Did I miss a thread that we landed a new OC from South Dakota state?

Depends on the the QB. Did you only want Lynch to run 6 - 8 times?

Did Childers really run it 14 times a game last year? That number seems high.

Also, say what you want about Childers but that kid is tough. He was getting his ass kicked in the bowl game and kept getting up.

194 rushes in 14 games(avg=13.85). For a staggering 2.7 yds/carry.

You gotta take sacks out of that to get a real idea how effective/infective he was on the ground, though. I think he got sacked like 12 times the last two games of the year.

Those numbers would include sacks.

My bad. That’s a big miss because guess who is 118th in the nation at sacks allowed? NIU. If I recall just two years ago NIU was first in the nation in least sacks allowed.

Some (a lot?) of that is Childers fault, but I just don’t think it gives you an accurate representation of his running ability

He has a red@ss too. after the fumble in the bowl game, he lowered the shoulder to punish the tackler. He is pretty tough and competitive
