I wasn't alive yet in 1973, but I will say Finch and Robinson being the big stars on that team were hometown kids. So it was an extra sense of pride. I was around for Dana Kirk and his 1985 Final 4 team which had an entire roster of Memphis kids (except maybe 1 and Keith Lee was West Memphis, but same difference.) That will never be done again in college basketball. You will never see a team w/ an entire roster of kids from 1 city, much less one that makes it to the F4. But it still lingers today that Memphis fans want our best high school kids to stay home. Its a pretty unique situation, really. Kids leave other major cities all the time, but not many have got away from here. I don't see any doing that as long as PH is coaching.

Add in that back then, there were no major pro sports in town so Tiger basketball became the city's de facto pro team.

Just my $0.02

You left out Larry Kenon from the 1973 team. We "rented" him for one season, lol. He put that team over the top, much like Derrick Rose did in 2008.

In fact, I contend that Kenon may have been the best Memphis player ever, but he was only there one year, so he gets overlooked a lot.

He had one of the best pro careers, too.

Memphis is a basketball 1st city in a football crazy south.

This is very true. Culturally, sociologically, how did this happen, the Memphis part?

It's fake news. More people show up to a Memphis Tigers football game in a down year than would show up to a Calipari final four team in the pyramid or the FedEx forum.

Attendance wise, sure. Football dominates everywhere in the south. But culturally and emotionally, the Memphis fan base is much more tied into the ups and downs of the basketball team than the football team, IMO.

And this is coming from a diehard fan who loves both sports, but realizes success in football is more important in the long run.

I also think a portion of those football fans are closet SEC fans who come b/c they love football, not b/c they love the Tigers.

Technically 10,000 max.

Much of the 2nd level is empty for virtually every game...yet UCF still charges $20 for single game tix for those seats.

Does the Administration provide an explanation for the pricing? In theory, a fuller house helps the home team, adds to concession revenue, and allow fans of lesser means to afford a live game.

Our AD is trying to use the same ticketing philosophy for basketball as he has successfully done for football. Make the individual ticket prices significantly higher than the per game season ticket price to incentivize people to buy season tickets. There are three major problems with that though.

1. It is much easier to go to all of the football games in a season than all of the basketball games in a season.
2. Unlike the football team, the basketball team has not been to the NCAA tournament since 2005 and has never won an NCAA tournament game in four appearances.
3. Florida is a football state, not a basketball state.

The football team has been to the NCAA tournament????

It's been a while, but actually yeah. Just not since the early 90's.

Kenon averaged 20ppg playing with a great scorer in Finch and 16rpg playing with a great rebounder in Robinson.
