The key building block for the future is Audige. This is a no brainer.

RE: UNCW & Charleston Road Games This Week
It was a tough loss tonight. The first half I thought was terrible again offensively and the disparity in fouls was in large part to the fact that the Tribe was either not aggressive and was missing threes, or turning it over. The second half was a little better offensively, but the fouls piled up and they could not get stops. Toews absolutely shredded us. He could have had 35 as Nathan was really the only even potential deterrent to his drives which left Cacok and others open. Luke was simply overmatched tonight. I have not felt that way nearly as much as I did tonight. But, I am not sure what could have been done differently. LJ couldn't stay with him either.

Milon and Pierce were both very bad for long stretches again tonight. Matt finally caught fire late, but it was not one of his best games. Justin is missing something from his game. His shot is basically off and he is not cutting without the ball, or getting it in places where he can score. Justin should be a better version of Audige right now on the offensive end(based on experience and his height), but he is not. He still looks hurt to me. But, Justin is still a really important player. When the Tribe is playing well, Justin has a lot of rebounds, points, some assists, blocks, steals and even turnovers. You basically feel like he is everywhere. Right now, every game is a real struggle in part because the Tribe cannot sustain 15-20 minutes of solid basketball. Lots of turnovers(many unforced) and long cold, dry spells at the offensive end. On defense, there are a fair number of good efforts, but the team lacks cohesion and help. I think Nathan, Chase, LJ, and Justin can play defense individually, but they are struggling to play well together. If there is ANY silver lining, it is that there are still 6 more weeks to try and get healthy and find something together. None of the guys, even Nathan, will get to where they want to be without help from the team as a whole. You can tell some of them are frustrated, but I was pleased that they kept battling tonight.
I don't think UNCW is a weak team by any stretch, especially not at home, but I don't think right now that they are on par with the top teams either(even with Cacok and Toews). So, our loss leaves us around 7 or 8 in the league right now. UNCW was a lot better than the Tribe tonight. Now, we can to look forward to some Charleston home cookin and trying to find a way to stop Grant Riller for the first time ever.

We came back tonight when Audige started covering Toews. I would guess that didn't happen sooner because Shaver was concerned it would lead to Chase getting into foul trouble.

RE: UNCW & Charleston Road Games This Week
The gameplan needs to be getting more touches for Knight. Milon should not be getting more shot attempts than Knight....

Also, if Pierce is going to keep playing this poorly, he needs to not be playing. Whether it is injury, lack of confidence (I feel like I saw this in the CAA tourney last season with him), or whatever, if he isn't going to play smart on both ends of the court, then get somebody like Blair or Harvey out there (and once Rowley is healthy, that is also an option).

The FT disparity sucked in this game, especially because I usually feel like we don't foul because we usually have to play some semblance of a defense for fouls to occur... Offensively, I feel like Audige and Owens have to be starters next season, which will either mean we will force one of them to be PG for us or Milon is going to be a sixth man. Stilll a chance for this team to figure it out, but somebody needs to step up and be a leader, especially when things aren't going our way. Otherwise, start looking towards next season...

I hate to say it, but Milon isn't cutting it. 6-16 last night all on three pointers. He needs to score inside and on penetrations. He's a real big kid physically, but is a step slow and not a leaper. For now, I don't see how you bring him in off the bench. With a healthy Rowley we could move Pierce to the 3 slot and bring him off the bench.

Also, Harvey looked good last night. He's the one we need to give more minutes once he's fully healthy.

RE: UNCW & Charleston Road Games This Week
Both Milon and Pierce have gone through bouts where they have struggled. Confidence is a big thing. I thought Owens played better last night and Chase was very good as well. If the Tribe can find a way to get Pierce going, they still have a shot. The stat stuffing, double double Justin is still in there. I don't think it is coaching, I think it is injury. Much like how the coaches stuck with Milon last night despite his massive struggles, I appreciate them sticking with Justin, too. With Scott and Rowley out, there are no other options. Harvey was fairly solid in his return, but Blair struggled last night.
I think the best plan was for Nathan to lead the team and for Justin and Matt to be consistent, valuable pieces. When those 3 guys play well, we would be tough to stop. Add Chase and LJ who are developing quickly, and you have something. The one significant offensive positive I saw last night was Chase and LJ looking to score at the rim and also inside the 3 pt line.
There are still significant roles for Paul, Luke, Thornton and Harvey as well this season. Quinn may play if he can score a little, rebound and defend, and not foul. Maybe even those 5 could become like the old Carolina blue team(Sorry for the dated reference). You know 3-4 minutes of energy spark, hard defense, etc.. It is time for roles to be defined for the team and each player. Then, they would have 6 weeks to sharpen it and do what they do well. While the loss was disappointing, things might be getting close to going to a new level with Chase and LJ.
Let's see if we have any improvement Saturday dealing with our nemesis, Grant Riller.

Saturday is perfect for Audige’s formal coming out party. Feed this guy; watch him drive it to the rim. Notice improved play in the post as a corollary. He’s a player!!

I think Audige could shut Riller down. It may be interesting to see if Riller can hang with Chase. Of course Riller could get Chase in foul trouble early and then Katy bar the door.

Pierce must be playing hurt. He has lost a step of quickness, both on the offensive and defensive end. Every time he spins and turns his back to the basket, I want to scream! It (almost) never works, and I think that's him trying to compensate for that lost step to get by his guy. Ugh, Tony should tell him he will get some bench time any time he spins.

Junior vs. Freshman. I'm not optimistic.

If there is one theme to our disappointment this year it is our unexpectedly high degree of reliance on freshmen. Going into the season the hope was we had 3 all-CAA caliber stalwarts as upperclassmen and only needed to plug in one or maybe two freshmen to round out the lineup.

Instead we are looking like a freshman team with one or two useful complements among the upperclassmen.

You can't win with freshmen. You can excite and tease and project wonderful things for the future but winning, not so much.

Seniors make coaches look like geniuses; freshmen make fools of coaches.

RE: UNCW & Charleston Road Games This Week
We are far distant from being OK; and we’re not so far.

Milon ended the game 5-8 from beyond the arc after starting 1-8.

If he starts 5-8 it’s a totally different ballgame and we probably win.

Of course, maybe he shot 5-8 because the game was out of reach. And Toews absolutely destroyed our PG defense. And we had at least 5 TOS in the first half where we drove right into their D with no idea of what we wanted to do.

My belief is there are pieces there. I don’t think it will come together this year but as long as the pieces are present there is hope.

Milon has always been a remarkably streaky shooter ...it doesn't matter whether we're behind or ahead, when he's hitting them he scores in bunches and when he's not nothing goes in.

He's had a number of games where he has one awful half and one sensational half.

That's why you have you have keep him in there...his shooting can turn one way or another on a dime.

Here’s hoping that Milon carries over his UNCW 2nd half shooting, Pierce guts it out as he begins a return to form, Knight puts up a double-double, and Audige continues his coming out party by scoring 15+ and shutting down Riller. Let’s go Tribe!

We so desparately need a win today. It is the type of game that could carry us forward for the rest of the season. Hoping today is a big day for Justin and Chase. Also hoping that if Riller goes off, no one else from Charleston goes with him.

Riller and Brantly are the only two consistent scorers. I think the key is to shut at least one down and/or get them in foul trouble. We've got no depth with two out so we can't afford to get Nate in foul trouble.
