The General (Quinton Patton WR from LA Tech and former SF 49er) had a good day for the Birmingham Iron today.

This league will go the same way of every other alternate to the NFL we've seen.

High side success is somewhere perhaps just higher than the Arena Football League.

You mean like the alternative American Football League which merged with the NFL and whose teams have collectively accounted for 18 Super Bowl Championships?

Nope.

I was referring to the modern NFL.

The NFL that was "catchable", so to speak, is long gone. Since the AFL/NFL merger there have been eleven failed football leagues, at least one per decade and only two moderate success stories, those being the two different iterations of the Arena Football league, the original league running from 1987-2008 and the relaunched version 2010-present. Of the other ten failed leagues, the arena minor league, af2(2000-2009), was the only other one to make it beyond four seasons.

Big win for AAF, as new football league posts better ratings than Rockets-Thunder

Never, ever underestimate the power of football in America.

The Alliance of American Football, a league most people probably couldn’t name one team from before this week, debuted on Saturday night. Its debut, with two games on CBS, was up against a great NBA matchup between James Harden’s Houston Rockets and Russell Westbrook’s Oklahoma City Thunder on ABC, a fantastic game that ended with a comeback Thunder win.

And the AAF posted better television ratings.

That’s a heck of a victory for the new football league, which generally played to positive reviews in its opening week.

Exactly. I thought real football had been outlawed in all 50 states. This league actually doesn't throw a flag on every other play for "targeting" or "roughing" the passer.

I don’t think they are trying to catch the NFL. Every story is about development and second chances.

Well like I said, maybe they can be as successful, perhaps even a little more, than Arena Football at its peak in terms of popularity and market share.

If I were betting I'd put folding within 5 years at ~60% and at least 75% within a decade.

Which is just one more landmine for them to navigate, one guy getting paralyzed probably changes everything, given everything we now know about player safety, I'd be interested to know what kind of legal protections the league is giving itself in terms of player contracts if they are knowingly playing with a less safe set of rules.

How Many CUSA Players are in the AAF
I think people are basing safety concerns on one or two hits. They eliminated kickoffs and only 5 can rush the passed at a time and no secondary blitzing. Any sacks we saw can be attributed to poor pass blocking week one.

The league itself is openly promoting a hit to the head on a QB as a selling point.

For those who can't stop complaining about the NFL protecting its players, I suppose that could be a selling point, it isn't for me.

RE: How Many CUSA Players are in the AAF
I have no idea if the AAF will be successful but from all accounts, the folks that attended the Bham game yesterday said it was a good experience and exciting atmosphere. The AAF seems to understand its place in the pro football landscape as a developmental league for the NFL. Obviously I dont see this league and the XFL both surviving but this league seems to have some pretty accomplished and intelligent people running the show.

I’m with PiKapp on this one. Sure, they beat a regular season NBA game in ratings for OPENING night, but if you think about it, that isn’t all that difficult to do. I think it’s a breath of fresh air, but I just don’t see it lasting long. I hope I’m wrong.
