WBB Game 18: ODU (12-5, 3-2) @ Southern Miss 9-9 (1-4)
The Saturday the ODU Road Warriors continue their trip against the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles. The school is offering free tickets to federal employees with a government ID due to the shutdown. One ID will get you two complimentary tickets at the box office prior to the game. It’s a nice gesture for the public and a good way to boost their attendance. When you consider the fact that Camp Shelby Army Base is right there in Hattiesburg, the shutdown might impact a lot of people in that area.

This season the Lady Eagles are 9-9 (1-4). They are 8-5 at home in the Reed Green Coliseum. The team is coming off their first conference win of the season beating the 49ers.

Hailes was a preseason ConUSA first team selection, and is second in the conference in apg with 4.7 apg. (Taylor Edwards is tied for third with 4.6, so it’s very close) They are a defensive team first, with their 59.5 ppg given up ranking third in the conference. With a 75.6 FT% average, they are the second best free throw shooting team in the league. This was evident in their win over Charlotte where they went 15-for-16 from behind the line in the 4th quarter to seal the victory. Traps on defense, which is what they are famous for.

Inside the Numbers……..
……SouthMiss…..ODU
PPG………61.2…….71.4

TPG……19.5……14.5
SPG……8.3……….8.1
BPG…..2.8……….2.9
Ast/TO ratio:
Southern Miss: 0.7, ODU: 0.9

One redshirt senior and no “regular” seniors on the team. This year’s Lady Eagles squad is young. But Hattiesburg is always a tough place to play. Head coach Joye Lee-McNelis is entering her 16th season. I think she is longest active head coach in the conference. (Middle Tenn St’s head coach started one year after she did) This is a great chance for ODU to continue the team’s winning streak and separate themselves from the rest of the pack in Con -USA.

Standings
Middle Tennessee St 5-0
Rice 4-0
WKU 4-0
UAB 4-1
North Texas 3-1
Marshall 3-1
ODU 3-2
Charlotte 2-3
UTSA 1-3
UTEP 1-3
La Tech 1-4
Southern Miss 1-4
FAU 0-5
FIU 0-5

Side note: Next year the ODU women’s volleyball program will start. Scholarship players will be on campus, but games won’t happen until August of 2020. I am sure everyone is excited. It is interesting to note that Southern Miss will have its inaugural season for women’s Beach Volleyball starting next month. (They have a regular indoor volleyball program as well that plays in the fall)
Perhaps if women’s volleyball takes off, ODU can consider a team one day. But if you need a reason to get excited about women’s indoor volleyball…consider this. VCU has a team. That match-up has to happen. ?

ODU’s good defense likely will make this an interesting game. It’s winnable for the Monarch’s. I’m traveling and likely can’t listen or look at the scoring as the game moves along. Hope I’ll be [/i]pleasantly surprised when I finally get to see the score later tonight. GO ODU.

Having trailed most of the game, the ladies came back to pull this one out over the last few minutes, 53-50. Congratulations Ladies!

Finally got to take a look at the score and was I surprise. Trailing most of the game, the Monarchs pulled it out in the end. Must have been one heck of a game. A 4-2 record in conference play is nothing to sneeze at. Great win. Very proud of the team and Coach Nikki.

Tennessee Lady Vols have lost five in a row, are no longer ranked, and fans in Knoxville are calling for Coach Holly Warlick's scalp (she had the unenviable task of replacing Pat Summit). If she is fired, I'm wondering if our great coach would be a candidate to replace her. (Remember, she played and stared at UT).

Unless ODU wins Con USA and goes to the NCAA, I don't think Nikki would be first in line for Tennessee. Of course, she is very popular at that school. But I would think that they want somebody with a proven track record. A former UT player like Kellie Harper would make sense. Mickie DeMoss is still a name that means something in Knoxville and some people thought it was either Holly or Mickie as next in line to Pat.

Obviously Sylvia Hatcher will retire at UNC. But a lot of people forget she was Pat's graduate assistant back in the 70's when Pat first started out. If she wanted the job, very few would have a better resume than her.

Kellie Harper was mediocre at NC State and was eventually let go. Don't know if she coaching somewhere else now.
