Historic Basketball League
It’s called Historic because in the 1920’s a survey showed over half the Universities in the country we’re paying their basketball players and they are going to do the same. The main basketball player involved is David West who apparently is passionate about giving high school grads an alternative to the NCAA. Here are some points a lawyer involved on the project made:

1. It will be a 12 team 144 player league.
2. The players will work for the league not the individual teams.
3. They are trying to get some of the best 144 players (one to three per team). The current one and done players.
4. They will sign one year contracts for between $100000 and $150000.
5. They can play in the league for up to 5 years although if successful most players will end up in the NBA sooner than that.
6. Along with there salary they get a full ride scholarship and they must attend school while under contract.
7. They will play 22 games over 12 weeks in the summer in 4000 to 5000 seat arenas.
8. Hoping for a 6 team playoff over Labor Day and the all stars will tour Europe and Asia during winter break.
9. TV coverage will be streamed. Tickets will minor league type prices.
10. Money will come from corporate sponsors many of which are already lined up (Silicon Valley, Delta were mentioned).
11. He mentioned it might be a good league for someone like Aaron Kraft from Ohio St. Good player with no chance to make NBA. He could play in US, get a college education and make a few hundred thousand over 5 years.

12. This isn’t exactly the concept I anticipated but it’s interesting.
13. Currently Cleveland has a franchise so some of these players could end up going to school at Kent, Akron, Cleveland St, etc.

The entire interview was done by Les Levine and it can be seen on Cleveland.com or directly on youtube. It’s under the January 15th show (although it was actually the Jan 16th show) of “More Sports and Les Levine”.
