Everybody knows it's time to get better in football. There are no true basketball 'is everything' schools anymore. I mean even Kansas is putting forth the football effort now. I wonder why 03-wink

This could be a really good hire. 04-cheers

Spanos was an assistant coach on 3 super bowl teams... and comes from Bama...so the dude certainly is a winner.

The only two possible problems I can see is that Spanos was only a defensive coordinator for two years (UCLA) out of his whole career, and he is more of a pro guy that a college guy... can he recruit?

He can't do worse than the previous dc... we know that.

UConn blog article on Spanos

“I have known Lou for a long time and have always admired the job he did so when I had the opportunity to become the head coach of the Washington Redskins, Lou was one of the first people I hired,” Mike Shanahan said. “Lou is a heck of a football coach and a great family man who players instantly follow and listen to and his knowledge of the game is very impressive. Perhaps his best quality is his ability to relate to players and that is of the utmost importance. This is a great hire by UConn.”

Once he took over the Bruins, he employed a much more aggressive defense, helping the team go from 14 sacks the year before he arrived to 47 in 2012.

“Lou Spanos is a man and coach I greatly admire,” former UCLA coach Jim Mora said. “He had an immediate and profound impact on the UCLA football program and our student athletes as our defensive coordinator. Lou is a great communicator, a creative football mind, and a humble and loyal person. He has worked with some of the great defensive football minds of this generation and has taken the best attributes of each and applied them to his own successful philosophy.”

Oh Defense can get worse, just ask any Memphis fan that stomached Tommy West's last 2 years and Larry Porter's only 2 years before Justin Fuente was hired, lol. We were locking arms and crossing fingers we could just make a single stop.

Kidding aside, he sounds like a solid hire.

"Once he took over the Bruins, he employed a much more aggressive defense, helping the team go from 14 sacks the year before he arrived to 47 in 2012."

^^^That's an extremely impressive stat of the DLine. If it isn't at the cost of yards in the Secondary, of course.
