In other words, this was as catastrophic a knee injury as almost any athlete has ever suffered. This isn’t just a run-of-the-mill torn ACL, where doctors repair it and you’re back playing football in six to eight months. Milton’s injury — a dislocated knee — is infinitely worse because the entire knee joint itself was displaced and all four major ligaments that secure the knee were ruptured.

“I knew how devastating it was as soon I saw it on TV,” said nationally renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Peter Indelicato, the team physician emeritus for the Florida Gators. “A dislocated knee is as bad as it gets. It’s the worst knee injury you can have. He faces a real uphill battle to play again. It’s a long shot.”

Even though Indelicato hasn’t personally examined Milton, he’s seen numerous dislocated knees throughout his illustrious career.

What makes Milton’s injury so uniquely serious, he says, is the related nerve damage, which often times doesn’t fully recover.

You can have a dislocated knee without nerve damage (see New Orleans Saints backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater) and a return to the field is much more likely.

But even when the nerve is only bruised or stretched, Indelicato says, “It causes a loss of sensation and motor capacity to move your foot up and down. Recovering from nerve damage is a long, slow process.”

Even if Milton is able to recover, it won’t be by next season.

According to Indelicato, Milton is facing at least one more surgery (for the total knee reconstruction) and possibly more.

If Milton plays again for UCF, it will be in 2020.

Milton won't be ready next year. This guy is the starter.

I doubt Milton will be ready either. Saw something the other day where he’s doing low weight leg presses and is ahead of schedule.

The mental trauma might be even tougher to overcome than the physical trauma. I wish the young man well.

Although I wish him the best, I don't believe Milton's coming back or, at least, I don't think he will regain his starting role.

Agree with this docs assessment. I'm all for being optimistic, but it would be a miracle if he ever steps back onto a football field again. Wimbush is a solid addition for UCF. I've seen him quite a bit playing for ND. He's a great fit for their system.

The injury to Jaylon Smith from Notre Dame looked worse. He had nerve damage but he's now back full speed after 3 years.

You have to be kidding.
Jaylon Smith's injury, while significant, paled in comparison to Milton's injury. I mean, not even close.

It'd be a miracle if Milton played again. Just my opinion, but I just don't see it happening.

Dallas LB Jaylon Smith came back from a pretty serious knee injury...may not be as bad as Milton's...
Just goes to show they may be making some strides in the world of medicine.

Actually one full year of recovery. He was drafted in 2016 after being hurt in January, played in all 16 games in 2017 and started 6. Moved into full starting role this year, less than three years after his injury. Most reported that it was likely career ending when it happened as well. Dallas was seen to be heavily reaching taking him with an early pick in the 2nd round of the draft.
