Wow.

Still remember how B12 fans and especially WV fans kept replicating the lie about the ACC blowing up, when Maryland left. These rumors kind of destabilized the ACC. One WV fan kept relishing in his thoughts that WV ended up in a more stable position than SU/Pitt. Its all laughable now.

It's telling that the Big XII just had their dream championship - Texas vs. Oklahoma - and Fox STILL didn't want it next year...

Nothing beats the Sugar Bowl. Best big bowl to attend. Fan bases are concentrated in a small area, full of bars/restaurants. Walkable pretty much anywhere, but short lyft/cab rides mostly.

I would LOVE for the ACC to snag that Sugar Bowl spot.

Something tells me ESPN would love that too - and it will probably happen in a few years if things keep trending as they have been.

I don't know. The ACC isn't full of traveling fan bases. Aside from Clemson, FSU, U of L and VaTech... really don't see it. Bowls want a good travelling fan base and eyeballs.

CFP-NY6 Bowls are different though, since the Bowls themselves don't have as much power as they used to. But even assuming they did, had the Sugar been an SEC-ACC match-up from the beginning:

2014 - CFP Semi-Final game, no Sugar contract bowl tie-ins that year
2015 - Mississippi vs Florida State (instead of Oklahoma State)
2016 - Auburn vs Florida State (instead of Oklahoma)
2017 - CFP Semi-Final game, no Sugar contract bowl tie-ins that year
2018 - Georgia vs Syracuse (instead of Texas)

Win one (2015), lose one (2018), and at worse a tie (2016). But again, under the current set-up Contract Bowls are an entirely different animal than non-BCS NC games were in the past.

Cheers,
Neil

As far as travel, the Peach Bowl would be the best.

The SEC would never take their best available team* out of the Sugar Bowl. Personally I'd be fine with ACC vs. At-large in the Peach Bowl, but money probably dictates playing in the Sugar if it becomes available.

The Big XII attaching itself to the Sugar Bowl was a power move that certainly made them some money. I’d rather see each power conference be tied to a bowl with whom they have history, in the case of the Big XII, the Cotton Bowl would be cool.

The Big 8 had an Orange bowl tie in.
The SWC had a Cotton bowl tie in.

Let's face it, the current Big XII is more like the old SWC than the old Big 8

True. Both the Sooners and the Cowboys seem much more tight with the Texas schools than they do their remaining Big 8 members.

The ACC had a bowl tie in with the Orange Bowl in the 50's.

As Esayem notes, it's the loss of the Peach Bowl that really hurts.

Beyond that the goal should be:

The ACC number one that does not make the playoff should be in either the Orange or Sugar Bowl. (Miami or New Orleans)
The ACC number two should be in the Citrus (Orlando)
The ACC number three should be in a new Peach Bowl (Atlanta)

It's the same travel time from Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill to either Miami or New Orleans. It's a potential extra distance only for the Gt/FSU/Miami fan base and given that it is New Orleans it should be worth the trip.

Interesting goals, but right now the Citrus (or even the Outback) uses the SEC-B1G connection to get them on NYD. The Citrus usually has the #4 or #5 SEC team vs the #3 or #4 Big Ten team. So, based upon the above I assume you left out the TRUE goal for the conference that has a shot of accomplishing something like the above.

To challenge for these type of bowls or even get a new Atlanta Bowl up and running, the ACC would need Miami and VT back to their late 90s early 00s form, to go along with FSU, Clemson, and the potential for an ND team not quite good enough to make the CFP/NY6 bowls. Why? Because as pointed out in another thread THESE are the type of bowl games that have options and prefer strong traveling fanbases/ratings draws to help stimulate the economy and make $$$ for the bowl game organizers.

Now, having said this, it doesn't minimize the need for programs like (alpha) GT, L'ville, NC, NCST, Pitt, SU, and VA to raise their level of play as well to support the preferred 4 and 5/8ths. 03-wink

And I believe that goal is something we can all agree upon, but unfortunately we as fans can't do much to bring it about. Just have to hope the conference and the individual schools know what needs to be done and are in the process of getting it done.

Plus it is a goal that needs to be done even IF the bowl system blows up in the future.

Cheers,
Neil

Right, that’s where I was going with that. I think the Fiesta is a good bowl to have open for at-larges just in case BYU or a Mountain West team breaks into the picture.

I’d like to see the Gator Bowl dump the Big Ten, or at least give a guaranteed spot to the ACC every year. The Gator needs to pony-up some of that money they were going to use on a BCS bid and get back on NYD.
