STR - FOX drops the Big 12 championship game.
Indicating that it was no longer financially viable for them Fox decided to drop the Big 12 championship game. Might be just one more move closer to Texas and Oklahoma leaving the conference in 2025.

RE: STR - FOX drops the Big 12 championship game.
Not a great look for the Big 12, but lots of factors involved:

* Fox was paying $20M each for the odd-numbered years - '19, '21 and '23. ESPN has the even-numbered years.
* Fox explored playing the game on Friday night, but Big 12 wants in on Saturday to make it easier for fan travel. Also issues with AT&T stadium availability that week.
* Fox has the Big 10 championship in prime time on Saturday night. SEC Championship is in the 2:30 window, and Fox and Big 12 didn't want to compete against SEC Championship.
* So Fox can either broadcast the Big 12 game in prime time on FS1, or play at 11:00 on Fox. Game not worth $20M with a 11:00 local time start.
* Fox tried to negotiate a lower rights fee with the Big 12 based on the 11:00 a.m. start, but the two sides couldn't agree on a lower number.
* ESPN will probably get the 3 odd-numbered year games, and flex the ACC/Big 12 Champ games between ABC and ESPN in different parts of the country on Saturday night.

You're kidding me. 20 mil for that thing? And they turned down Fred Smith's willingness to sponsor the whole thing? They deserve to fold.

If ESPN gets those games I bet they will pay less than what the Big 12 was getting from Fox. The Big 12 may be in a bit of a pickle there.

RE: STR - FOX drops the Big 12 championship game.
The Pac-12 is not doing well, the Big 12 isn't doing so well either. This MAY be the catalyst for a Texas/Oklahoma move to the Pac-12 (14). I could see ESPN trying to force the issue along the lines of 'Hey, UT does us a big favor, go to the Pac-12, eliminate the Longhorn Network and we'll give you some nice consolation prize to get us out of that awful contract for the Longhorn network.'

Alas, I wouldn't get our hopes up for a 'P5' stake in a revised Big 12. A league of Okstate/TTech/Baylor/TCU/WestVirginia/IowaState/Kansas/Kansas State and some AAC aspirants is NOT going to be considered a P5 and - more importantly - is not going to get a P5-like TV contract. Would be a great hoops league for certain. And, it would be a step up from the AAC.

Ok State will go wherever Oklahoma goes.

So let's just say OU, Tx, and OSU are all gone.

That leaves 7 teams.

Take the remaining 7 teams and pair them up with Memphis, Houston, UCF, Cincy, Boise, BYU, and USF. That's a solid 14 team league that could very well make a claim to be a P5 conf.

Now that fictional scenario won't happen, but that's the proactive approach I would take if I were the AD's at Memphis, Houston, UCF, USF, Cincy, Boise, and BYU

I'd leave out Boise and add SMU.

But yea, that was a kick in the nuts to the B12. You never want to hear that one of your products isnt worth the money.

If B12 did imploded with OK, Texas and OK St leaving, then this will be the first time traditional Power 5 (football) schools of current big tv money contract will be downgraded to G5/non power five conferences status and money. How is that going to work for them? Could the old theory of 4 sixteen teams power conferences be a reality sooner than we thought?

I'd take Boise simply because of their tradition in football. One of the winningest programs in the last 10 years. Travel would be awful and would be a hard sell, but Boise would add more football wise than SMU.

Since 2001 Boise is 197-38. They are 12-6 in bowl games and have finished in the top 25 12 times.

Already would have the Dallas viewership with TCU.

It will be a true P6. It won't fetch $40 million per school, but it will get half of that. The whole thing fell apart last time because Texas wasn't allowed to green light expansion while leaving out Houston. It will be even more tricky for Texas to bail on all 3 state schools and Houston in the future.

If Texas bails and the rest of the Texas schools are in a conference where they earn $10 million per year instead of $40 million each, that is $90 million less per year that finds itself going into the state of Texas from the reduced value of the TV contract. That doesn't even count ticket sales which will for sure plummet if this happens.

If Fox was bidding in the teens and the conference refused it, I would think that ESPN would bid in the even lower teens. The entire leadership from that idiotic conference and from each school is atrocious.

Ok, so then you have to look at it this way. Compare Kansas State, Kansas, Iowa State, Texas Tech and Baylor to Memphis with us on equal footing. How can anyone say that they would be at our level? The only reason that their attendance numbers are better is because of years of huge paychecks and a great home schedule every year.

Swap out the money and schedules for 5 years and we will blow the doors off of all of them and we will for sure draw much better TV numbers. We probably already do in a few cases.

The news can do nothing but accelerate Texas’ and Oklahoma’s belief that the rest of the conference drags them down.

If Texas and Oklahoma go anywhere it will be to the Big 10 or the SEC. 16 team super conferences here we come. The Big 5 become the Big 4.

OU isn't going to go anywhere without Ok State

830, do you have some info or link as to why you think this?

If OK goes to the Big 10, Oklahoma State is not going with them. The Big 10 has no interest in Oklahoma State.

If OK goes to the SEC, from what I have read, the SEC would also be willing to take Ok State to get Oklahoma in the conference.

The PAC 12 thing is done, Texas and OK no longer have any interest. But, if the Big 12 could steal Arizona and Arizona State from the Pac 12, the Big 12 might survive past 2025.
