Poll: How many power conferences will there be in 2026?
Other than the ACC, most media deals will have been renegotiated by 2026. When the dust settles, what will realignment have wrought? How many P conferences will there be when that process plays out?
Let's assume for this exercise that Alston does not have a major impact on the process.

I think you'll see a P4 with a G6.
The XII gets split up
OR
The PAC is unable to resolve it's issues and breaks up
In either case the big dogs will find homes and the rest will either be absorbed into current conferences of create another "Group" conference.

RE: Poll: How many power conferences will there be in 2026?
I voted 5. I think there will be 4 "elite" power conferences and 1 "other" power conference. The elite, I presume in 2026, will be the PAC, B1G, SEC, and ACC. I think a 5th with a combination of XII leftovers, AAC schools, and maybe a couple MWC schools will be the other. I believe it doesn't get the Sugar Bowl autobid that the XII currently has. I think it does get what the Big East had in the BCS which was an autobid to its winner but no particular bowl designation.

I voted for 5, even though I'd prefer 4. Unfortunately, I see a shakeup of the P5 in the next several years to be increasingly unlikely.

There will be 5 because none of the big dogs in each of these conferences want to give up their power.

RE: Poll: How many power conferences will there be in 2026?
I do see a consolidation into four "elite" leagues, along with a fifth "power" league, to cement the separation with FBS. Breaking up the Big 12 will be hard, since it makes more than the PAC and the ACC, but it is the most susceptible to raid, not only due to its small membership (10) but because if either of the top schools can get poached (Texas/Oklahoma), it allows for a ton of movement and parity. Ultimately, I could envision a "merger" with many of the Big 12 teams brought into the other leagues. The SEC and B1G will be the two consumers at first, followed by the PAC and ACC.
B1G: Oklahoma and Kansas
SEC: Texas and TCU
PAC: Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Kansas State and Iowa State
ACC: West Virginia

Yep, nothing says elite like Iowa State, Texas Tech, and Kansas State.

While I understand your point, Texas Tech and Kansas St. were tied for 4th in football over the life of the 12 team Big 12, behind only Texas, Oklahoma and Nebraska. Texas Tech was tied with Nebraska for 3rd over the last 10 years.
And if you look at AP poll points during the BCS era (1998-2013), Kansas St. was 17th, ahead of Tennessee, Nebraska, Penn ST. and Notre Dame.
And Iowa St. had over 57,000 in attendance in 2017 (and probably higher this year) which put them in the top 30.

RE: Poll: How many power conferences will there be in 2026?
There will be four power conferences. PAC and B12 will find away to merge. Probably 9 schools from the PAC and 7 from the B12. There will be too much pressure and opportunities for schools like USC, UCLA, Texas and Oklahoma to grow their revenues. The other conference mates will be worried about losing their anchor programs and do what it takes to make a broader western conference work.

Other like more than 7 with the cord cutting on the rise thanks to ESPN getting too greedy, the networks for each conference and the Longhorns will fail. Nobody wants the PAC 12 Network, the Longhorn Network failed, and the sings of the ratings for the ACC for the past several years, it would be a disaster. The P5 would break up to form conferences for their regions which you could see the best of the G5 schools becoming a P school.

4-1-4. The rump Big 12 gathers up enough AAC and MWC members to get to 12, and gets media deals and bowl agreements that put them a step behind the P4 but a step ahead of the G4. For example, they won't get a guaranteed CFP spot if the expand to eight teams, but they'll get their own NYE bowl bid every season if that still is a thing, and they'll be more likely to have second-tier bowls against P4 teams than the other non-power conferences. Depending on who they add in this scenario, they might still qualify as a power basketball conference.

Now just how would you form the new conference?

RE: Poll: How many power conferences will there be in 2026?
There will be 4 most likely. The networks' desires to keep the Big 12 flush took a nose dive today. I expect Kansas and Oklahoma to be a little more antsy now.
But, I wouldn't rule out 3 either. The best possible competitive balance is more easily acquired with 3 conferences of 20 each than it is with 16, 18, or any other skewed number. If the ACCN doesn't payout as expected by its third year 2021's conclusion then the prospect for 3 becomes even more likely. If the ACCN pays out as expected it will be four.
Even if the PAC does nothing, I don't see them getting raided because the distance for full conference membership to the Big 10 or Big 12 is still too great. Minor sports would get crushed.

23.
Because the term "power conference" upsets some people, the media will eventually cater to them and refer to every football conference in Division I as a power conference.
P23, baby.

Big 12 remnants apply for an NCAA waiver allowing it to maintain continuity even with only however many teams it'll have by that point. Pluck whatever combination of AAC and MWC schools (or even CUSA/MAC/Sun Belt if that gets them where they want to be) until they hit their number. Play on, playa.
Don't know if it's feasible that way, but rules can change given the circumstances. The NCAA may consider it in its best interest to keep the Big 12 alive in some form. Certainly the B12 leftovers would, if the alternatives are independence or joining the AAC or MWC instead of a conference with the best of those schools.

The answer is 4 1/2. This will be similar to when it was 6, but the Big East 2004-2012 was more like a 1/2. The Big 12 will be that 1/2 with a line up of top G5 and probably 6 or 7 of the little 8 (TCU, Baylor, Iowa State, K State, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Houston, Cincy, UCF, Colorado State, maybe BYU FB, maybe still WVU). They will still officially be a member of the Autonomous group, but they wont make anywhere near the same money.
