WBB: Inside the numbers. Wayne and Morris
The Monarch's Ajah Wayne through 15 games in her freshman season has 184 points and 136 rebounds. She is averaging 12.3 ppg and 9.1 rpg. With 13 games left on the regular schedule, plus any playoff games (conference, playoff) Wayne has a very good chance of winding up in the top 10 all freshman ODU scoring class. She might even pass her teammate Victoria Morris who finished number six on the list in her freshman season.
Freshmen scoring top 10.
1. Anne Donovan 648 points 1979-80
2. Nancy Lieberman 563 1976-77
3. Angela Cotman 411 1976-77
4. Rhonda Rompola 377 1978-79
5. Celeste Hill 374 1990-91
6. Victoria Morris 340 2017-18
7. Okeisha Howard 325 1999-00
8. Adrienne Goodson 323 1984-85
9. Tiffany Green 313 2004-05
10. Kelly Lyons 298 1986-87
Rebounding wise though, Wayne doesn’t have much further to go to break the top 10 for freshmen. She needs 26 more rebounds to tie #10 on the list.
Freshmen rebounding top 10
1. Anne Donovan 491 rebounds 1979-80
2. Inge Nissen 410 1976-77
3. Corrina Turner 278 2002-03
4. Tiffany Green 257 2004-05
5. Kelly Lyons 221 1986-87
........Celeste Hill 221 1990-91
7. Monique Coker 180 2000-01
8. Nyree Roberts 171 1994-95
9. Rhonda Rompola 169 1978-79
10. Linda Jerome 162 1977-78
And finally, Wayne has 36 assists on the team. Over the last three games she has picked up 13 of them. If that trend continues, she might have an outside shot of cracking the top 10 assists for freshmen as well. It would be a challenge, but as talented as she is..I think she can do anything she wants to do.
Freshmen Assists top 10
1. Nancy Lieberman 212 1977-78
2. Ticha Penicheiro 203 1994-95
3. Alli Spence 178 1999-00
4. Marie Christian 126 1983-84
5. Ashley Betz-White 110 2011-12
6. Rhonda Rompola 105 1978-79
7. Kate Larkin 91 1980-81
8. Kim McQuarter 81 1985-86
9. Sharon Francis 79 1998-99
10. Pam Elliott 76 1980-81
Yes a lot can happen from now and then, but we are watching a very special season from Ajah Wayne when you compare her numbers to the all time ODU greats.
Victoria Morris has come alive in her past two games. She shot 8 threes and the threeball is what she is known for. I think her name will be compared with ODU’s all time three point specialist, TJ Jordan. Stat wise, she isn’t too far off from where Jordan finished her sophomore year.
Victoria Morris.
Freshman year: 79
Sophomore year: 38 (still in progress)
Total number of 3’s: 117
TJ Jordan
Freshman year: 47
Sophomore year: 93
Total: 140
Right now, 23 three’s is the difference between the two players. Victoria still has 13 games plus playoffs to go. This season ODU has more scoring options than last season, so if Morris does finish the season ahead of Jordan that would be impressive. Even though it’s unlikely she will have as many three’s as Jordan did in her sophomore year.

They have a very special set of players. This team with a couple of key additions will be VERY special in a year or 2. I just hope that everything academically and physically stays in place.
