Construction on a new Basketball and Volleyball Development Center at Kent State University is set to begin later this month.

The Golden Flashes have long lacked a practice facility specifically for their basketball and volleyball teams, which often are forced out of the M.A.C. Center when it’s used for various other school functions. The new practice center will be located in the M.A.C.C. Annex and will cost an estimated $1.7 million, which will be funded by “philanthropic gifts” according to the resolution released by Kent State University announcing the project.

The Basketball and Volleyball Development Center is scheduled to be up and running by late summer according to Flashes Director of Athletics Joel Nielsen.

The new practice facility follows a series of recent upgrades to the M.A.C. Center, which was opened in 1950.

“We’ve focused on M.A.C. Center improvements over the past several years to include new chairback seats, a reconditioned floor, and graphic improvements,” said Nielsen. “This fall we added a state-of-the-art high definition videoboard, a ribbon board that shows live stats, and a new audio system, which have all greatly enhanced the gameday atmosphere for everyone in the building. Soon we’ll have a dedicated facility for basketball and volleyball training and practice. We’re actively fundraising for the next phase of M.A.C. Center improvements that will most likely be structural in nature.

Kent is known for having one of the more dated basketball arenas and they have just pumped money into their arena.

I'm not saying MAC basketball facilities are elite, but with a few exceptions most would be competitive with the bottom of the P5. Places like Virginia Tech or Baylor where they've been able to put in successful programs without being NBA caliber.

Game day atmosphere at EMU is usually mediocre, bad or worse. I don't disagree with the '12.'

I do disagree with the facilities ranking of '6'. Strip off the game day atmosphere and EMU has one of the best arenas in the conference.

EMU, BSU, and NIU have similar arenas, e.g. capacity, age, etc.

Facilities isn't just the arena.

Which is why Miami is last. Millett is bad, but we also practice in an ugly underground gym so that has a lot to do with it.

Should go new and go smaller like BG did with their new arena. 6,000 seats keep it more intimate.

No one should half ass do anything like BG Did. Anderson was basically Duke. It needed updating but it was cool. The Stroh?? Lordy it's ugly.

Yeah, that's weird. Gotta think it came from Miami or Ohio.

Miami would fit both for academic snobbery and hidden jealousy at being convenient to the highway.

I agree with everything you say here except I don’t think the Stroh is ugly. Actually, I think it looks pretty sharp with the big falcon statue out front. The issue is that they half-assed it and they didn’t incorporate the great features of Anderson Arena. I understand why they built a new arena rather than renovate: structural issues leading to higher costs and Anderson is in the middle of campus with little to no parking close by. But the Stroh will never equal Anderson Arena. When that place was packed, it was hot, you were touching the people you were sitting next to, and you wouldn’t be able to hear right for the next day or so.

The last year or two there have been rumors of Miami either announcing a new arena or a drastic renovation of Millett that'd downsize and upscale it. I'd go the renovation route, while it's on the fringe of campus it's next to a lot of parking and there is some history involved.

Man, I hate bringing this thread back to the forefront, but I’m bored and looked over the rankings again. I’m REALLY bored.

Anywho... What, exactly, does “Selling Pros” mean? And I’m going back to BG again because if it means what I think it means, in that placing players in the professional ranks, I’m VERY confused as to how BG is second to last in the category. Isn’t BG the only school in the conference that currently has an alum playing in the NBA (Richaun Holmes)? The Falcons also produced a lottery pick in 1997 (Antonio Daniels, pick 4), who proceeded to play about 15 years in the League, not to mention Keith Mcleod, who played just under 5 years for several NBA franchises. Those are pretty good results over 21+ years for any MAC program. Of course, I’m not counting all the players who have had successful careers overseas.

Are we sure this survey is legit? It seems like some college kid just put this together ad hoc to pass off as some serious, thought-provoking piece of info for people like us to Lose our sh*t over.

even if it is a serious and thought provoking study. it is still a poll of opinions mixed with attendance and budget and ex-college player professional career data. it's fun for a minute if you are a MAC fan, but don't lose your sh!# over it. there should be more important things in your life.
