We got some nice additions in the last class like Bell, Butler, and Lovan but overall it fell short of our needs. Four guys really weren't ready for C-USA level ball: Bertain, PSG, Pearson, Akabueze (our highest rated signee). All may develop into solid players but we needed more immediate help after losing so much to graduation and transfer.
Even if Boyce had been a contributor this season that would still mean almost half the '18 class could really use a red-shirt year. Hurtado had one and still isn't playing. Having this many developmental players is brutal with only 13 scholarships.

RE: Bad Night for UAB Basketball
I'd like to know the reason behind not playing Akabueze this year. He doesn't seem any worse than some of our other players that get lost on offense/defense. I doubt he has much game stamina but I've seen some of our other players barely able to walk off court to the bench when we substitute after fouls/timeouts.
Sure would rather get him PT experience than some of the other developmental type players. He is built like Zion Williamson.

I'm only commenting on that short amount of gametime I saw him play back in Nov/Dec.
I'm not one of the board insiders. :)

49-49 with five minutes remaining. La Tech outscored UAB 15-4 down the stretch.
Gueye had zero points and Bell was 1-6 from 3-pt Land.
La Tech was called for six fouls the whole game. UAB had 13.
UAB had 13 turnovers while La Tech only had 7.
JaColby Pemperton was 5-8 from 3-pt Land.

If Hurtado can’t help after a redshirt last year...

Is our team so irrelevant that no one cared to make a game thread?
Hurtado was supposed to be one of the stars of his class. He’s been utterly useless. I don’t think Ehsan is as good of a recruiter as everyone like to rhin.

Those are pretty good players. I also like Bell, Butler, and Lovan. PSG and Pearson both have good bit of upside IMO. Bryant and Lovan have all conference potential over the next couple of seasons.
We have some good players but I think Ehsan has brought in a few too many projects.
History question: What UAB basketball freshman that was red-shirted (not for academics or injury) has then become a major contributor at UAB? There has to be some but I'm drawing a blank right now. I can't think of a good four year player that didn't at least play some their freshmen season.

A great one. Knew there was at least one but I don't think it's been common in our history. If you count the RS Watts had to pull off Ehsan's first year, we have had four eligible guys RS in 3 seasons without being injured.

Dr. Damon Cobb finagled an extra year of med school with a freshman redshirt.

Hurtado is 6'6 213-220. he need to be moved to a forward position or a wing. give him some minutes at the 2 or 3...that would add depth, he big enough and at 6'6 a match up problem...I want our coaches to develop these players..If they cannot develop them, give the players a chance to grow somewhere else.
I see us losing 2 maybe 3 players in the off season...due to lack of playing time and development.

And Bell was a surprise qualification, right?
I like the upside of this group of wings, and I think Scott-Grayson makes a big jump next year, but we still need a piece or two.
What I don't understand is Bertain's lack of playing time. The high degree of difficulty shots he makes in this video is exactly what we're missing right now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMSEew7pEEQ
And sure, it's a highlight video, but he was a 45% three-point shooter at high volume. I don't care if he's a negative on defense-sometimes you just need points on the board. The threat of an elite shooter just unlocks so much on offense. The gravity Bertain would have on the defense just opens the floor for everyone else, especially a guy like Bryant who can breakdown his defender.
Speaking of Bryant, he possesses the athleticism to be great, but his shot-selection is poor. Whenever he learns that he doesn't need to hit a homerun on every possession, his numbers will jump. I just hope it happens in a UAB jersey.
