I think of the AHC as the office manager of the team. The tedious administrative work, aware of all the operations, may assist the coach, and could be a “swing” when needed, filling in any missing gaps. Some get some shots at play-calling, or consulting. Seems to pair with a position coaching title or recruiting coordinator. Jack of all trades. An odd title with a long leash, and can know where the bodies are buried.

Football operations have expanded so much over the last decade that while I’m sure the GA’s and other assistants pick up the crap work, AHCs shield the head coach and coordinators from the daily administrative operations, while also being in a leadership/command role.

One thing I know about higher ed...leadership titles are sacred. Head Coach may as well be Professor, Provost, Dean, or President/Chancellor. It’s the mid-level administrators and director who get the fluff titles. “Recruiting Coordinator” gets there, but they can be put in check by the HC and primary coordinators. AHC is a little more, at least, it implies it is.
