RE: Thanks Coach Carey
I don’t think being a former athelete makes you a better coach. Also doesn’t have to be a former Huskie. Definitely don’t have to have been a great athlete. Carey had a much better college career than Kill and Doeren by far. I want the best candidate that can coach period.

College sports are always a rebuild. There are no franchise quarterbacks, no franchise running backs, there is no tanking for a high draft pick---everything changes on a college roster all the time.

I am NOT a Carey guy---my opinion he's (well) below average in game and clock management.....he was embarrassing to watch on TV berating refs or players, particularly kickers----but I do need to admit that I've never seen him in a family living room with a recruit, I haven't seen him in practice when games are really won. I do give him props that unlike many other MAC teams he was able to stay in that 7-9 or + win range most of the time while here and the Western Michigans and Bowling Greens of the conference can't say that.

I believe that much of the success we have is that we are in one of the worst two conferences in the country--but the fact remains that Carey both won a very high percentage of games that we should have and won a fair percentage of games that we probably shouldn't have.

Obviously, if this becomes official, there has to be a lot of money involved because he was locked in a guaranteed another five? seasons at 6-700K+.

I wish him luck and wish luck to whomever takes over......

And, I'm not STF guy either, but he's only made one significant hire during his time and I think Lisa Carlsen was a pretty good pick so I will give him the benefit of the doubt that he will be able to replace Rod.

Thank you Temple. I am happy we got something from Rod Carey but there is a reason he didn't go with Doeren. He isn't a smart decision maker. Not a risk taker and I'm thrilled we will have new blood. My hopes is we bring Hammock in so we can keep bringing back former athletes. These guys show first hand the work needed to get to the next level. Rod I'm so happy not to have your crap record in bowl games anymore. Bye Felicia

Wow...that's a new one, it's a rip on Carey that Doeren didn't take him? ha. I'm not sure what some of you will do with your life now that you won't need to come up with asinine thoughts on Carey here.

It it altogether fitting that the "Thanks Coach Carey" thread has turned into "Rod Carey Sucks" since that has been the case with every thread for the last three years.

I was never a huge Rod Carey fan but I appreciate his efforts at NIU. He kept NIU a float through some tough financial times. Rod had an outstanding graduation rate and kept NIU football respectable. He did a good job! Best of luck to him and his family.

I'm looking forward to the next chapter in Huskie Football. STF please do us right with this coach search.

Correct.

Stand by for “crickets” or an explanation that only MD02 can provide.

So what you are saying is the obsession this board once had with PJ Fleck will now become Carey, if not worse?

It's coming, 100% guarantee. 03-melodramatic

RE: Thanks Coach Carey
Would just like to take the opportunity to thank Coach Carey for his work here. He ran a class program with very few issues and recruited and coached up class players who came to be fine representatives for the university. Regardless of what people say he did bring a lot of success to the program. Although we have not turned into the next "Boise State" as I think we all hoped for, he leaves this program on solid footing. We continue to be a perennial MAC powerhouse regardless of what people think, which given the limited resources he had and we have as a university is a great accomplishment. My hope as most others is that our next coach continues this success and can carry us to even greater success over the coming years. We obviously have challenging schedules ahead, and you never know what to expect out of the MAC conference. Best wishes to coach and continued success.

So "apathetic" for NIU during the past 6 years is running a clean program, graduating the players,
winning the majority of conference games, competing for and winning championships, and losing bowl games.
NIU should be so lucky the next coach does this....

Another thing I read in these threads is this infatuation with Coach Doeren.

I understand he had two very successful years and NIU, was fortunate the stars aligned and got an invite
to the orange bowl but I have followed him since he left NIU and his record is mediocre at best in 6 years.

I guess NC State is not "apathetic" under Coach Doeren since he is running a clean program, graduating his players,
losing the majority of conference games, not competing for championships, and winning 3 of 5 bowl games.
I think he is a good coach but he has not set the ACC on fire in 6 years.
I actually think Dino Babers might if he stays at Syracuse long enough, but I doubt he will be there long enough.

I wish I had a dollar for every post on here when someone said to fire Carey
or that Carey would never get hired for another head coaching position.
Well not only did Carey not get fired, but he got hired by another team.
Does this hiring say anything about the football acumen on this message board?
I will leave that for others to determine.
