His buyout wasn’t high enough!!
It only makes sense to increase the buyout when you give a coach five more years and increase his pay.
Woohoo, we get a 1-for-1 with Temple. How exciting...
May be why Temple wanted him, he was a cheap buyout.
You do realize Temple has received $6-7mm in buyouts from two coaches just this offseason? They can afford any G5 coaches buyout with money leftover easily.
Maybe, JUST MAYBE, they wanted Carey because he is a good coach who brings stability to a program?
Or maybe they wanted all the extra money leftover to hire a really good coaching staff to put around Carey. Carey needs all the help he can get with the offense. He showed he lacks a lot on that side of the ball.
lol

Carey was the head coach for the highest scoring offense in MAC history, for the record.

You think Rod and his agent would agree to a buyout over $1M? No chance.
Where else was Rod going to go lol? He would take whatever NIU offered him. It's not like anyone was beating down Carey's door and he doesn't have to pay the buyout, the school hiring him does.

Easy to do with someone else's recruits and offense in place.
He just led one of the worst NIU scoring offenses this season in the last decade.

Carey is literally leaving to take another job and people are STILL acting like he’s a bozo who nobody would ever hire.
Amazing!

Was the Temple job presented as an opportunity to him while his contract was being extended four more years in December 2017?

Yeah, this is how negotiating a contract goes.
“Do you have another other job offers right now?”
“No.”
“Cool, so a billion dollar buyout then?”
“Deal!”

He's going to Temple. A team that was the whipping post during their time in the MAC. He's going to make more money but the job isn't a step up.

You’re right, Temple is only going to triple his salary because, uh....? One of your knocks against Carey was he “only” dominated the MAC, so now the AAC isn’t a step up?
And by your logic, UCF wouldn’t be a step up either.
Come on, man.

Are "home & home" agreements typically part of buyout clauses? Don't remember hearing that come up much. Obviously not part of DD's contract.
Wish Rod was going to USC...

For all of one season, it's not like he installed the offense. The guy was a career D3 coach before NIU.

I wouldn’t say it’s typical, but it does have it.
I know Shaka Smart had one in his VCU buyout.

Getting an opportunity to coach against the 2017 National Champions once a year is certainly a step up.

He took over an offense coming off a game where they had -1 passing yards in the 2nd half. I don’t think he’s offense illiterate lo

The AAC as a conference is a step up but the Temple job is not. Temple is not a better program than NIU. It might be in the sense that they can pay more, but over the last 20 years the NIU gig has been a way better job.
