RE: New Coach Discussion
Jay Niemann is available, having left Rutgers. The new coach may want to scoop him up for defensive coordinator. I know he left here on bad terms but his beef was with Carey. Niemann also gave us recruiting inroads to Texas.

Baltimore Ravens (2014–present)Running backs coach

Canada has had lots of ups and downs..6 jobs in the last 8 years. As for Kane, he worked for Carey for 4 seasons, the team would be familiar with him, he did build the defense...but he did work for Carey for 4 seasons.

Heh, while the idea of getting an NIU football player and alumnus to be our head coach is appealing, he's mostly been a running backs coach. We need someone who has strong and well-rounded offensive coaching experience because that side of the ball needs a lot of work.

It would also be nice to get some assistant coaches who recruit the south. We've gotten away from Florida and Texas and need to find some people that can recruit there. We need the speed that we got with Martel Moore, TLL, Akeem Daniels, etc.

Hammock certainly has better credentials than PJ Fleck before becoming HC at WMU:

PJ
2006 Ohio State (GA)
2007–2008 Northern Illinois (WR)
2009 Northern Illinois (WR/RC)
2010–2011 Rutgers (WR)
2012 Tampa Bay Buccaneers (WR)

Is anyone familiar with Hammock's personality though? PJ Fleck can recruit and has an exciting personality that appeals to the young generation. Hammock has been a position coach for a very long time and no one has given him a head coaching gig, why is that? Does he not want to be a head coach? He's also been out of college coaching for a while, so how good are his recruiting connections right now?

As a coordinator? I’d take him.

The thing with Kane & Hammock they're both in their mid 30's. More likely they'd move on after a short (assuming successful) stay.

Canada at 46 might stay longer?

If you think Canada is going to stay anywhere very long, I suggest you go look at his history.

Also, nobody is staying for a long period of time if they’re successful. That shouldn’t even be taken into consideration. Get the best guy.

While it would be nice to keep successful coaches like Jerry Kill and Dave Doeren longer, until we start paying $2-3 million that is never going to happen. Any good MAC head coach is going to leave for more money.

Canada has left us twice before. He seems to be a job-hopper and doesn't last at any place long. It is what it is, but if he's successful he's not going to stay here.

How the hell is Canada still only 46? He was a coordinator here in 2003! I would have thought he was in his 50’s by now.

He did a lot of recruiting when at Wisconsin

Thomas Hammock has a wonderful resume and a lot of great connections. Very intrigued. He could put together an awesome coaching staff and would recruit very well. I’m wondering if he’d be willing to take a pay cut?

What do people think of Chris Creighton at EMU? He'd have more resources, easier time recruiting, and has already shown the ability to turn around a program.

Eric Klein is available too, having recently left UConn. Klein is a great strength coach who was here during the Kill years.

I think he’s a good coach but he’s not going to leave for a job in the same division. I doubt NIU could substantially increase his pay. He’s also 22-40, 13-27 in the MAC, 0-2 in bowls, and 0-5 against Carey. You of all people throwing his name out is hilarious.

RE: New Coach Discussion
Anybody who thinks Hammock is a bad choice is obviously blind or naïve. He has MANY connections in NCAA and the NFL. I would honestly trust him to put together the best staff from top to bottom.

In regards to straight head coaching talent and potential, I would take Canada but we should expect him to leave after 2-3 years with any success.

My top 3 would be:

1) Canada
2) Hammock
3) Kane
