The groups do. A team in pod 1 can at worst be seeded 5th (at best 1st). A team in pod 2 can at worst be seeded 10th (at best 6th). A team in the third pod will either be 11th or 12th. The 13th and 14th rated teams will not be going to the tournament.

No, but you’re guaranteed no lower seed than the lowest ranking in your pod. So if you’re #5 and in the top tier you can’t be #6 or lower seed in the tourney. Even if a team from the second tier ends with a better record. But you can move up to the 1-4 seed and get the by in the tourney depending how you play in your pod.
Kind of wish, since the first 4 get byes, that they'd done the pods as 4-5-5, instead of 5-5-4. This way making the first pod guarantees a bye in the tournament and elevates even more the top 4 teams RPI/NET. Plus it's easier to do the home and away stuff and gives us like a mini tournament at the top.

This makes sense.
Add to that, #4 and #5 will have only just played each other during the flex schedule and, baring an upset on the first day of the tournament, will have to face each other again on day two.
This circumstance is less likely for the lower-pod teams, on the theory that they will be knocked off earlier in the tournament.

UTSA is 2-0 in CUSA
So pod assignment is determined by conference record only? I don't know if I like that. The entire body of work should be considered
Ummm. Conference play is all that matters for the PODs, yes. And rightfully so. That way cupcake schedules aren't rewarded.
This.
If every single one of our members played cupcake schedules and then dominated those schedules we'd be doing... exactly what the P5 conferences do. Spoiler alert... it works. They get all the multi bids because two thirds of their games are in conference against teams that also racked up a lot of wins.
BUT if you're concerned about that then just base it on RPI which ignores non D1 games and heavily relies on strength of schedule.

Both good points but since it’s four games, 5 teams makes for a perfect round robbin. The bottom tier will have a repeat game in the last four games.
edit: And I kind of like the idea of 5 teams fighting for 4 spots. Adds a little more to it.

They have the p5 bias though as well and can get by with anything.

That’s the mission for my mission impossible pod!!!
UTEP’s bb Coach will be Jim Phelps, and Doc Sadler will be point man, as usual. This post will self destruct...

Truly fascinating that LT is currently pod 3. Did they have injuries? I really thought they were going to be a solid or good team this year. They still have 2 home games and they rarely lose at home so I doubt they will stay there.

Yeah, their NET ranking of 127 belies their current pod ranking. Worried about UTSA's games at USM and LA Tech this week. Henson's teams are 0-2 at USM so far, and 2-0 at LA Tech, but our two wins at LA Tech were by 1 pt and 2 pts, and came down to the last possession.
