Can't have it both ways.

I agree. Do NOT hire buddies!

You do know Fleck hired Pinkham and Ciarrocca because they had worked together at Rutgers, right?
Lester announced when he was hired at WMU that he was calling upon his friends, and that for years they all talked about getting together for their dream situation. Far be it for me to discourage buddies getting together for some professional assignment like they had always dreamed about, but it does make it much harder to tune those colleagues up, or terminate them.

Assistant coaches should be hired because they are better than the other candidates. I fear that was a secondary consideration with Lester and many of his hires.

Sure fleck worked with his assistants and knew them well, but I believe he hired them because he thought they fit his vision best.

Look, we all know Lester made a mistake hiring daoust. Why would you hire the ball state DC when ball states defense sucked in 2016 ???? That defense gave up a ton of points and yards..He made the right decision firing his friend.

He only had a short time and limited pool to hire from getting the gig after the coaching convention was over, that was a unique circumstance. Keeping him for last year was questionable but I’m sure he was hoping for continuity to pay off, it didn’t so much and he made a corrective action.

The problem with TL is that he hired people who worked for Bill Cubit.

You know, the Bill Cubit that WMU fired because the football program was languishing in below average mediocrity.

Those hires should have never, ever flown with Dunn still around.

Can’t argue about mediocrity, but Cubit was over .500 overall, which is the pure definition of average mediocrity.

I thought Bill Cubit hired some great assistant coaches while here.
I also believe Cubit himself is a good example of the Peter Principle.

Anyone think Jim Harbaugh would've been allowed to hire some of Hoke's assistants? I don't think so.

I think some of you are ignorant of the coaches fraternity that exists everywhere. Watch NIU this week. It could become Wisconsin south campus. Coaches hire who they are comfortable with. Like anything it's who you know.

I think Coach Gaither has a son that plays LB at Appalachian State. Led that team in tackles as a junior. Possible that he could transfer for his last season here? I don't know, but it is something to keep an I out for.

He hired at least one - Greg Mattison.
