RE: Dixie State to join WAC
The Big West isn't going to invite Portland State as a full member. They are a bus league. That's a nine hour bus trip from nearest current member. Two hours longer than the longest trip (outside of Hawai'i, who subsides travel). And in reality, Davis is the outlier now that Pacific is gone - four hours from nearest member.

The WAC is for schools that are actually trying, while the Big Sky is a pathetic holding tank for the west's least ambitious universities. In order to leave, a Big Sky member would first need to be able to fog a mirror.

Some of the WAC schools are tying, others are not (Chicago State). So really not much different than pretty much any other bottom tier D1 conference. WAC made some great adds by getting private schools willing to invest in athletics (GCU, CBU) which will be good for the WAC in the long run.

The WAC is different than the Big Sky. The WAC is an Olympic sports league, the Big Sky is a football conference. Basketball is the #1 sport for the WAC. Basketball is secondary to football for Big Sky schools. The Big Sky does not have baseball or men's soccer. Two Big Sky schools, Sac State and Northern Colorado, play baseball in the WAC.

No Big Sky school is going to join a WAC without football and no WAC school is going to join a Big Sky without baseball and men's soccer. The WAC does have advantages in basketball because schools like GCU, Seattle and NMSU have larger basketball budgets and the because the WAC is in better markets for recruiting.

As for schools that don't try, I think Chicago State and Sacramento State both try in basketball. Each school has had one winning season in the last 25 years. Chicago State basketball has limited financial resources but they do have a 7,000 seat arena. Sac State basketball does not get the support of their administration, which explains why they are playing in a 1,012 seat gym.

I mean, the players and coaches try. The schools don't. Chicago St. was a desperate add at a desperate time and will probably be gone as soon as the rest of the conference feels like they can safely part company, but other than that one outlier I'm a lot more impressed and optimistic about the effort, interest, and future of most of the WAC schools than I am about anybody in the Big Sky.

I know you are tied in with a few higher up peeps at Idaho. At the risk of sounding too much like NoDak, could you ever imagine a scenario where Idaho is part of a WAC FBS revival?

NMSU
Idaho
Dixie State
UTRGV??
Azusa Pacific??

Perhaps Liberty and the Dakota schools could be convinced to come play? It's a stretch but I'm just thinking out loud a bit.

There aren't any higher up peeps at Idaho. The State Board refused to renew the President's contract (thank God). He's finishing up his lame duck year and will be gone in May. The AD was fired before the school year started, and the President was specifically disallowed from hiring his replacement, so we have a fired President and a powerless Acting AD.

If history is any guide, we'll hire another dweeb with zero political/PR sense and the school will continue its slide into oblivion. But if we get lucky and hire someone with a pulse, he/she might realize that perception matters to a university and try to actually fix the 8,000 problems plaguing the athletic department.

Your guess is as good as mine, but the idea of Idaho in any FBS scenarios right now is unfortunately very hard to believe. We are finally breaking ground on a new basketball arena this spring, so a few good things are happening. But it's a long way from where Idaho sits now to FBS football.

Dixie St. has a long way to grow before they can be considered for membership in an FBS conference, if ever. Even more so for UTRGV and Asuza Pacific.

It is more likely that Dixie St. would move to the Big Sky (football only) to replace a few Big Sky football schools that move up to a new western FBS conference (which could be the WAC, for football only).

New Mexico State
Idaho
North Dakota State
Montana
Montana State

Other?

FCS Indy.

They already have S. Utah on the schedule in 2020.

They will have no problem filling an Indy schedule. Every FCS school west of the Mississippi are looking for FCS schools to play OOC games. They will need to travel, but schools like NDSU, SDSU, Montana, etc. will pay them to do so.

There is no more FBS for the WAC. It is dead and gone. They can be a FCS conference and perhaps adding Dixie St is the first step.

Interesting, thank you. I know the outgoing president was extremely unpopular so good to see there is some change there.

Weber State football has announced a three-game football series with Dixie State for the 2020, 2021 and 2022 seasons.

The two teams will meet twice in Ogden and once in St. George in the series.

Dixie State announced last week its plans to move to Division I and will compete as an FCS independent, beginning in 2020.

The first game of the series will be played on Oct. 10, 2020, at Stewart Stadium in Ogden. The Wildcats will return a game in St. George in 2021, and will host the Trailblazers again in Ogden in 2022. Exact dates of those games will be announced later.

Dixie St will find themselves with a steady supply of Big Sky schools wanting to play them. It would be nice to see Weber St, SUU, and NAU all be annual staples. Toss in two FBS money games and then hosting Azusa Pacific or another D2 school for old times sake.
