Neither are realistic targets

Is the number next to Los Angeles the number of people in Los Angeles who care about the WAC?

Being a tiny school in a big market isn't a positive. No one is starting a WAC TV network. No one is subscribing to some far flung cable channel to watch WAC (or Big Sky) basketball. Market sizes for small conferences don't matter.

Bingo! GCU gets some play in the Phoenix market SOLELY because of the Majerle/Colangelo connection. Once those are gone, goodbye coverage.

No one gives a damn in SLC about UVU. Seattle U gets a little play in Seattle because of history, but not much. CBU? Zero coverage. Chicago State? Zero.

There was a 50 word paragraph on the CBU loss last night at Kansas City to UMKC in the Los Angeles Times this morning. The same for the UCI and Pepperdine games from last night. CBU gets coverage in the Press Enterprise, which covers Inland Empire news and sports. The Press Enterprise is part of the Southern California News Group, which owns the Press Enterprise, Orange County Register, Los Angeles Daily News and eight other Southern California newspapers. So an article on CBU can appear in all 11 SCNG newspapers.

You have to win to get serious attention. There is just too much sports to cover. In today's LA Times, for example, there are three articles on the Rams, two on the Chargers, two on the Clippers game last night, one article on the UCLA overtime win at Oregon last night, one on the USC overtime loss at Oregon State last night and one article on the LA Kings loss at home last night.

There are also two articles on the Angels, one on the Lakers, a short article on tonight's Ducks game in Anaheim and an article on high school sports in the area. Surprisingly, there was no articles on the Dodgers or the two professional Soccer teams.

The point is, you get coverage in LA, but to get real coverage, you have to make noise. You have to win, because you are up against too much competition.

To ccd494, people don't really watch the Pac-12 network in Southern California. Or the Big Ten or SEC Network. Why would anyone want a WAC Network?

My point exactly. The money that schools and conferences make is completely untethered from the size of the media markets of the constituent schools. It is not worth uprooting yourself from a stable but small time D-I conference (and paying an exit fee?) to move to a slightly less stable but slightly less small time D-I basketball conference, particularly when it creates a football headache for yourself.

Coming in the 2020-2021 season.
Glad to see the WAC expanding and securing itself. They will be a great add and will a lot of support from a fast growing region. And being only 1.5 hrs from Vegas makes it pretty accessible even though St. George has a regional area.

Seems the softball stadium getting an upgrade or have upgraded. That means other D2 schools need to step up their game, or be left behind.

St. George has a nice regional airport (opened in 2011) that offers daily direct jet service to and from Los Angeles, Phoenix, Denver and Salt Lake City. So opponents will have the option of flying in if they don't want to bus in from Las Vegas.

If the WAC wants to have a realistic chance at bringing in existing D-I programs, they need to make travel manageable, i.e., become a western-only conference by waving goodbye to Chicago State, UMKC, and UTRGV. It's one thing to offer D-II schools their only outlet for moving to D-I. But D-I western schools that are already on tight and heavily-subsidized budgets won't want to bust those budgets sending athletes to Chicago, Kansas City, and the southernmost tip of Texas.

This would be putting pressure on Colorado Mesa, Metro State and Tarleton State to move up.

As a Tarleton alum, I dont see how this puts pressure on Tarleton to move up. D1 is a desire not something that it has to have.

Tarleton (just outside of Dallas/Fort Worth) currently has a home in Texas-focused D2 conference. The conference has a number of peer institutions including three other Texas A&M System schools (West Texas A&M, A&M Kingsville, and A&M Commerce). It is competitive on the field as well as in funding and facilities.

Basketball regularly makes the tournament with two elite 8 and one final 4 appearance in the last 5 years. Volleyball made the Elite 8 and finished in the Top 10 while Football finished season ranked #5 (12-1 Quarter finals).

Tarleton has conducted feasibility studies and publicly commented on a desire to move to Division 1. Yes, there is an interest to move up. That interest was more pressing between 2011 and 2014 when the conference lost 8 members. Since that time, the conference has absorbed the Heartland (gaining 8 basketball) and 2 new football schools.

However, it is no secret that their preference is for the the Texas-based Southland conference. Travel is easier, costs are more contained, and most importantly it offers a home for football.

FCS Indy.

They already have S. Utah on the schedule in 2020.

RE: Dixie State to join WAC
I wonder what they’ll ultimately do about the name. It looked like that was going to be resolved when they were set to be incorporated into the Utah system as UofU-St George. But that fell through.

I think some of the old-timers have no issue with the “Dixie” name, but St George is increasingly made up of transplants who find the name as confusing as the first people who posted on this thread. The population growth in the area will ultimately support a legitimization of the school that for a long time has been viewed as a glorified JC, party school (by comparison) with a weird name. I have to think that upward mobility will come with a rebranding at some point.

Interesting. I wasn't aware a rebranding had been considered. Perhaps there'll be a St. George State in a few years.

Brigham Young called the area St. George is located in as "Utah's Dixie", so it makes some sense. The school did change their nickname from Rebels a couple years back.

I don't see an issue with the name. If Ohio can have Bowling Green and Miami, and Pennsylvania can have both Indiana and California University, then Utah should be allowed to have school named Dixie.

Southern Utah is taken already. St. George State? - Weber State started as Weber Stake Academy, Dixie State started as St. George Stake Academy.

Weber is the named in turn after the county, but since St. George is in Washington County, that wouldn't work.

Colorado Mesa, Metro State and Central Washington could be a core as well. Central Washington need to add sports, but they called their club teams as emerging sports which usually the teams become varsity. They have plenty that fits them.
I also suspect West Texas A&M, Midwestern State and Angelo State have been approached as well besides Angelo State. As it is, Lone Star Conference have 20 schools and UT-Dallas is looking to joining D2 ranks and LSC. Tarleton State to WAC now makes sense because Southland is full right now. This would give Tarleton State an Independent schedule which they can play Southland and FBS schools nearby. Same thing with Central Oklahoma. They could play Southland, MVFC, Tulsa, Big 12 teams and SBC west schools. UCO could help some like maybe joining later as MVFC since Missouri State is just down the road as a bus ride.

I don't see an issue with the name. If Ohio can have Bowling Green and Miami, and Pennsylvania can have both Indiana and California University, then Utah should be allowed to have school named Dixie.

I know the history; my mom’s family were some of the people who came up with the name. (Proof: Dixie Salad is as gross as it sounds, but I still incorporate pomegranate in some other way into thanksgiving dinner for the nostalgia factor.

The school isn’t respected. It’s brand is poor. Additionally, the name evokes a kind of naive cultural simplicity or unawareness that people in Utah are sort of self-conscious about. Younger ones anyway. I don’t see the name lasting for that reason.

So, maybe 5 years ago, the deal was all but done for Dixie State to become the University of Utah St. George. I mean it came pretty close, and I sort of question whether or not the issue will be reopened at some point.

RE: Dixie State to join WAC
I am guessing that DSU is being motivated by the most important competition for most universities: competing for tuition paying students.

That topic seems very central in the schools FAQ: dixiestateathletics.com/sports/2019/1/10/dixie-state-wac-faq.aspx?id=136.

With Southern Utah University just 50 miles straight up Interstate 15, I wonder if DSU's admissions office found many students preferring to make the trip to enroll in a D1 school rather than a D2 school? That's the recruiting battle that means the most to university administrators.

RE: Dixie State to join WAC
Well it's official, Dixie State starts D-I reclassification July 2020 and WAC play in 2020-21, and FCS Football Independent.

They already inked Football deals to play Southern Utah in 2020, 2022 and 2024, plus are processing deals with Weber State and Montana State. Their video also mentioned getting to play three nearby football programs, SUU, Weber State, NAU; I suspect the latter two will also show up on their upcoming football schedules. (As I mentioned in an earlier post, Big Sky schools are happy to welcome a western independent they can schedule FCS OOC games against, and it looks like they are lining up to schedule Dixie State.)

Their introduction video mentions specifically getting to play UVU, CBU and GCU. The school President mention meeting with UVU regent, meeting GCU's President and how much Dixie State enjoys beating CBU. (MWC Tex is correct on that core; at least from DSU's standpoint)

Anyway good luck to the Trailblazers.
