Yup, both the WAC event and Dixie State event coincide. It looks like Dixie State is moving forward with plans to become D1 and joining the WAC.

I wonder if Dixie State's "potential" announcement will effect Metro State's and/or Tarleton State's D1 decision?

Glad to see this unfolding. Dixie State will be a fine addition to the WAC and help secure the future of the conference.

Dixie State is one of the best of the choices they have left.

I've seen several jump to this conclusion. Why or how is that more logical/feasible to some than Dixie football either being independent, land in another conference, or dissolved altogether?

They can do just fine as an independent. Enough Big Sky teams need OOC games, and the lack of opponents in the West is a real problem. They will likely end up playing 5+ Big Sky teams a year. Add a few home and home series with MVFC or Southland, a DII home game, a FBS money game and you are set

RE: Mystery Press Conference Appears on WAC DN
dback is right to cite the lack of teams outside the Big Sky out west. I'm really trying to get at the notion that Dixie State could be bright center of a new WAC football universe. I just don't see that. The isolation is a thing to question in regards to football... but it matters what alumni and students think about having the football program. Will there be an opposing reaction here?

Out west, when it comes to a relatively rural area, it's hard to imagine a population appreciating a program without football. The more urban, the much less people care if it isn't the Pac-12... and it can be argued that Pac-12 support is far less than ideal for a P5 conference.

DSU closing in on Division I move

From the article:

Quote:“They are exploring it and there is a good chance of them pulling something together based on our discussions with them,” Boothe said. “What that is? I don’t know. That’s all in the WAC’s hands.”

If football is not on option in the WAC, DSU will have to add another men’s sport to join the league. Boothe said that would likely be a men’s swimming or men’s tennis team since the school already has those facilities.

Boothe said that even if the WAC can’t field a football league, DSU would find a way around it. The creation of the WAC FCS league isn't a requirement for DSU to join the league in all other sports. And there are some other options for DSU's football squad if the WAC football league never materializes.

The Pioneer Football League is a non-scholarship FCS conference and Boothe said there were internal discussions about going that route but, ultimately, the athletic department decided it wasn’t something it wanted to pursue.

Boothe prefers the other alternative: FCS Independent.

While it’s not a long-term plan, Boothe said he’s comfortable having football be an independent for the time being — especially since that would allow the program to be eligible to play guaranteed-money games against FBS teams.

As for the Big Sky, the home of Southern Utah and Weber State, Boothe said that wasn’t an option.

“Informally through discussions, we know they are not interested in expanding at this point,” Boothe said.

Because the WAC has invited multiple D2 schools and literally no FCS team in modern times has tried to move up and make it work as an independent long term. Augustana still doesn't have an official home and I'm sure has talked to the WAC about football membership. We know the WAC has invited one of the Colorado football D2s (forget which one I think Mess?) and Tarleton State. Plus wasn't it DSU's feasibility study that said itself the WAC is inviting schools to start FCS football? This is the first step towards that. DSU is now a founding member of FCS WAC football, just waiting for the rest to follow.

Obviously DSU will start as an independent, but zero chance they plan on this long term without knowing there is plans for a potential future home. And I don't that's the Big Sky unless they lose members to FBS. I've seen on Twitter through guys like Spartypants the Big Sky is sick of it's bloated membership. isn't hard to picture a mutual split of SUU and UNC as they join the WAC.

And further as a fringe piece of evidence is the collapse of GNAC football and the potential of snagging APU, CWU, and/or SFU.

To be honest, it all sounds like fringe pieces of evidence to me. I am content with it just being the one thing we all *assume* it is (Dixie State joining the WAC), and letting the rest play out however it may. Seeing it as an absolute sign that "WAC football is coming back" is a few leaps too far forward, IMO, but maybe I'm alone on this one.

RE: Mystery Press Conference Appears on WAC DN
The article mentions that UMKC is looking to leave.

They mention UT-RGV and NMSU football, but the SLC in discussion with RGV found they were FBS or nothing, and it's hard to see NMSU football at FCS level since their program revolves around New Mexico and UTEP both FBS schools. If they went FCS you would have to think they would move to the Big Sky.

The article threw out the Big Sky football associates Cal Poly and UC Davis. But they are tied to each other and also UC Davis is tied to Sac State and the causeway classic. I can't see them trading Big Sky opponents for WAC. What is more there is no provision in the Big Sky bylaws to end a football associate. Those schools are members as long as they want to be.

Still as an Independent Dixie State will find plenty of Big Sky opponents, I would guess 5 or 6 a year. The Big Sky schools complain about a lack of western FCS schools to play non-conference games. Dixie State as an Independent helps solve that problem. So I think they'll be fine.

SUU, the Dakotas, etc muddled along as quasi-independents in the 5 team GWFC (along with CP and UCD) until permanent conference affiliation could be had. Dixie can survive in the short term as an FCS Indy. If the possibility of another D2 call up with football arises, that gives them a blueprint until they can get the 6 needed for an autobid. If they can get to four, would CP and UCD be interested in switching affiliation? WAC would have to prove to be stable, first.

So what is the feeling regarding Dixie St?

After looking at their facilities they seem to be at D1 level. The arena is really nice, the baseball field is really good. Also, St. George is a beautiful area and is a fast growing population center with the metro area around 170k. They will get quite a bit of support and maybe even surpass SUU in the near future.

Now the academic side of things....they are lacking compared to the rest of the WAC. No doctorate degrees offered and only 1 Master degree with 2 more coming soon. So from that viewpoint...it is underwhelming. But that is more on the President's issue. Fans don't seem to care about academic ranking of the schools in the conference.

The only ones that really scream to me it's coming back is the comments posted above by DSU AD about how this isn't a long term plan, what was said in DSUs D1 study of WAC intentions, and knowing Tarleton State & Colorado Mesa were all invited. The rest gives hope but isn't as strong, I agree. But this move is the first step in bringing back WAC football clearly. If it happens is still another story, but I don't think there's any argument it's not the focus of the WAC right now. Biggest name to watch is Augustana and if they do the DSU route and wait out a WAC football league with fringe hopes of MVFC, or go Pioneer which to me signifies they don't seen any chance of WAC football membership for a long time

The WAC has no standards. They have Chicago State and Utah Valley. And they have meh academic religious schools GCU and CBU. UT-RGV is another "regional" school like CSUB. Then they have a rather Big Sky (academically speaking) looking NMSU, and an urban school in UMKC, and a very selective Jesuit school in Seattle.

They have nothing in common except the need for a conference home.

*******************

As for the timing of Dixie State moving up, I think it will be July 2020. Cal Baptist announced two years ago at this time, spend one last year in D-II. On the other hand Grand Canyon announced on November 2012 and joined July 2013. But I think being a public school Dixie will be more deliberate. Also joining immediately would put their football at risk of having no games in 2019 - nobody at Dixie State wants to repeat what happened to Hampton.
