We’re not going to get someone as charismatic or as fiery a speaker as Houston. Don’t think we need to worry about his personality. Assistants can bring that fire as needed.

I was really hoping we’d hire Mr. Charisma himself. Of course I’m talking about Belichick. Damn.

Nothing really stands out. Even though we have all this talent, can he get them to play. That is the main question. He is going to have to show more then what he has shown to me so far. Saw a video of him talking with the team on their first meeting. The guys didn't seem happy or excited. We will see what type of motivator he is. You will say he did it at Elon, they beat us. We are a different animal. Wish him well and hope he succeeds and we win it all. He is going to have to prove it to me first, before I go the chains and saying we are going to win it all or even make it to the semifinals. We have all learned with all the talent, we just can't throw our jock straps on the field and win.

Nothing stands out?? His father is a Hall of Fame Coach. He coached under Saban at Alabama and won National Championships. Every single place he's been he's won. I know JMU is a different animal, but so was Elon. Elon was a trash heap of a program. He went in there and in one year instantly made them a playoff contender. They went from a 2 win team to an 8 year in his first year. And the two schools he went to were not good. Not only were they not good, but their budgets were incredibly small. In spite of all of that, he took those programs into contenders.
Now he comes into a place where he doesn't have to start from scratch and has a plethora of talent. I listened to every second of his press conference. No, he isn't a cheerleader coach in the way Houston made you want to run through a wall. Some of the best coaches don't have that same demeanor. Translation: Charisma doesn't make you any more or less a coach.
What this guy does have is a lot of confidence in his ability to coach. He knows he can coach and he knows he's good at it and wants to coach for a while. He's so confident in his abilities he was critiquing the things we could do better on day 1. He didn't try to butter us up. Instead he told us that we deserved better and that he could deliver.
Time will tell what he can do at JMU, but his history of coaching is undeniable. The man wins games and knows what it takes.

I also saw the clip from the team meeting. The apparent lack of charisma didn’t bother me. However, what did bother me was the script and the lack of eye contact. You can put whatever personality spin on it you want, but, if I was a player, I would not have been impressed. He did not command the room. I can only hope he’s good with the finer details of running a program and has surrounded himself with the right people who make up for his lacking personality. Lots of different personalities can lead, but I hope he knows his own weaknesses. I really want to believe, but I’ve got some coming around to do.

Glad you guys can make such detailed conclusions on his ability to lead by a 40 second clip

Personally thought the team looked focused and dialed in to what he was saying. It wasn't a run thru the brick wall moment.

My comments didn’t point to conclusions on his ability to lead, only questions. If we can’t ask questions, why are we even here?

RE: Random JMU Thoughts
I heard some players thought he was a “d**k.”

We need blue collar hard work, not someone that is going to be everyone’s friend. I’m sure not every player loves Saban, but he gets results. I’m sure the “we lost 4 games, we need to get better” speech probably rubbed some guys the wrong way. Oh well, no more entitlement. Back to being the hunter.

I’m with you 03.

Not impressed by Cignetti? 01-wingedeagle

There’s no doubting that JMU is a challenge and a step-up for Cignetti. That explains (in part) why he left Elon and took the JMU offer. He’ll have to perform and prove himself at JMU, however, to suggest his background isn’t impressive is just plain goofy.

Who cares what his style is? I don’t.
Winning games with integrity is my only measuring stick.
We will find out soon enough if he can deliver at JMU.

Maybe it was an entitled attitude that teams would just roll over after they have been to back to back NC games? Idk but we definitely had the talent to beat everyone in the CAA easily but that wasnt the case. I put alot of that on coaching not getting the players focused week in and week out

If just one key player did not lose his focus, we would have won 2 more games.

Dont think Dinucci had anything to do with our defense getting pushed around all day at Elon or fumbling up 4 driving to end the game. Or his two drives of play before getting pulled when there was still 3.5 quarters left to play at UNH. Large part his fault at Colgate but if Daka doesnt get a roughing the passer early, MH didnt call a dumb fake punt, D doesnt give up a drive after the fake punt, coaches dont abandon the run game midway through the game chances are we win. All of those things I just listed go back to discipline

I was thinking of UNH and Colgate. Perhaps I should have said one key position, so we can put the Colgate thing on the Coach and the Elon thing on the Tight End and the UNH thing on the QB.

It may just be me, but Houston's fiery pregame speeches didnt do it for me after his first season. If every speech was like that it becomes the norm and doesnt serve its purpose to give players that extra boost on gameday.

Who knows maybe Cignetti isnt that great of a public speaker but opens up more on the field talking with players. I know plenty of people that are completely different outside of the camera or formal environment

I think he teeters the line of cocky and confident, and I love it. People think he's a dick? Good. Life isn't all sunshine and rainbows. I guarantee you no one will be comfortable or complacent all spring and that's exactly what we need.

I believe the story for jmuroadwarrior is he retired in the Burg with his lovely wife and they pretty much hit most of the JMU sports home games, as well as travel to many road JMU athletic events. I used to hit all home games for basketball and football, and most road games, so we saw each other quite a bit. 04-cheers

Is this something most JMU fans think about perhaps doing one day? I know my wife and I have talked about maybe doing it at retirement. Family would certainly come first, but it is something that would be fun.

Oh heck yeah. Attend sporting events, workout at UREC, eat on campus daily. Sit in on a class or two. If I'm really fortunate, I can get put on the payroll.
Seriously, college towns are becoming more popular for retirement destinations.

definitely sounds a lot like my retirement plan. The current goal is to buy something now - wish I would have 10 years ago, but I won't let another 10 pass me by - and lease it out until I'm ready to move in.

Nick Saban is the least charismatic coach in all of college football! Dabo is the most charismatic. They have played for every national championship in the past umpteen years. There is more than one way to skin a cat. But, winners are winners. And, I saw Houston ripping some new a*% holes on the sidelines from time to time. Public and private persona can be quite different.

This x1000.
He's a no nonsense kind of guy and I love it. I think he's a good guy, but he's confident and has every right to be. He knows what it takes to be a winner and he's kicking ass and taking names right away. No lovey-dovey coach speak "Oh I'm just happy to be here" bullcrap. He's calling them out for losing and they should be angry.
That being said, I've heard several of his interviews with press and I really like the guy. He has been pretty gracious with the media and I think that says something. He's no Withers when it comes to that from what I've seen from him.
He is no-nonsense and down to business and that's exactly what this team needs.
