Last 16 years now a crazy only 33 losses. With 13 of the 16 years ending in a major bowl/BCS Title game/National title game. But still only the 1 title.
If you can underachieve while losing only on average 2 times a year- Ohio St has done so... Just crazy.
Winning a title involves a lot of luck.
In 1998 3 teams had to lose on the last weekend for Tennessee to get in the title game.
In 2001 2 or 3 teams had to lose for Nebraska to back in.
In 2003 Auburn never got a shot.
In 2006 they almost had an Ohio St.-Michigan rematch and Florida would not have had a shot.
In 2007 everybody lost on the last weekend and 2 loss LSU got in.
In 2008 Texas beat OU, but lost late in the last second and got beat out by an OU with the same record in the BCS. USC lost early and didn't get a shot. Utah was unbeaten.
In 2010, if the Alabama defensive player doesn't get careless running the ball back for a TD, Auburn wouldn't have been in the game. It would have been Oregon-TCU.
In 2011, Alabama got an unearned mulligan with heavy lobbying by ESPN. Oklahoma St. got left out after a loss on the road days following a plane crash that killed a number of Oklahoma St. athletes.
In 2014, Ohio St. barely got in. Baylor and TCU didn't.
You have to be there in the right position, but it doesn't mean you win a championship.
