Biggest comeback in school history, but....
In mere points this was the biggest comeback in school history. We had 32 minutes to accomplish that. However, I believe a bigger feat was against UAB in the Sun Belt tournament. We came back from 19 down with about 16-17 minutes left in the 2nd half versus UAB in the Sun Belt Tournament in 85 or 86.

That year ODU, FecesU and UAB were all on the NCAA bubble. Any two of those 3 making the conference finals were in. We played UAB in the semis (but could have been the quarters). UAB led by double digits at the half and quickly stretched it to 19 points. Their players started mocking our players saying "NIT, NIT, NIT..". They trashed talked a little too soon. We stormed back and won the game. Overcoming a 19 point deficit in well less than one half of basketball.

We Lost in the finals to FecesU but still got an at-large.

I'm not saying this was our 'biggest' program win ever, just our most amazing comeback.

Interestingly enough, some fella named Ronnie Wade played on that team.

So a Wade has been involved in possibly our two largest comebacks in program history.

Another interesting fact that season. ODU became the first team in NCAA Division 1 history to have 4 concurrent 1,000 point scorers on one team:
Kenny Gattison
Mark Davis
Kieth Thomas
Charlie Smith

Then the following week against us FecesU became the 2nd school to accomplish that feat.

I was at this game with my dad... the Sun Belt tourney was at the Hampton Coliseum that year. On the ride home, after Saturday's game, I was telling everyone about it. It was an unbelievable comeback and actually felt like a bigger comeback than what we just did against WKU, because it was the 2nd half. UAB and VCU spend most of the year ranked - the Sunbelt was really good in those years. Of the eight conference teams, three went to the tourney that year - UAB, VCU and ODU.

This was one of the most talented teams we have ever had. Gattison had an interesting release to his shot, but was tough in the paint - rebounding and scoring. Mark Davis was one of the best finishers/dunkers to ever wear an ODU uniform (think DR. J back then). Keith Thomas was an outstanding shooter and Charlie Smith was a solid PG that could score, when needed.

Was it Mark Davis.... that had one of the highest career shooting percentages in the NBA?

RE: Biggest comeback in school history, but....
Not only this, but the Sun Belt at that time was the highest level competition we've ever had in conference. Every team in that league had really good players with NBA scouts coming to almost every game.

Which is why when we moved down to the CAA, we went to the NCAAs for the first two years pretty easily and only lost the third because of the Culuko buzzer-beater prayer.

Another “point” that makes that 19 point comeback in half the time as the WKY game - no three point shot yet.

Actually Charlie was the SG on that team. A freshman by the name of Frank Smith was the PG. Frank would go on to be the ODU all time assist leader. When he graduated he was the #2 all time NCAA career assist leader. He is #18 now.

Yea and I probably wouldn't call Keith Thomas an outstanding shooter either. But he was strong, nasty, and tough minded and his defense was always on point. And he also didn't miss free throws.

That's right, Charlie was SG and Frank Smith, who went on to be one the greats was PG.

I don't recall how good a shooter Keith Thomas was % wise, but I remember him always hitting timely shots - big shots when we needed points.

I also remember sitting on my bedroom floor with a basketball listening to a game, when Charlie Smith hit a game winner at the buzzer. Someone can correct me, but I believe it was in the Sun Dome against USF or against USF in the Sunbelt Tourney at the Birmingham-Jefferson Coliseum.

I believe it was WKU in BG. Memory fuzzy, however.

Final tie in besides the name Wade on these two amazing comebacks. We won in 1985 68-67. We won this year 69-66. 135 total points scored in both games.
