CAA Basketball Power Rankings
CAA Compatriots,

With several conference games having been played, we recently compiled CAA Power Rankings through week 2 of conference play.

Most of you probably won't be surprised where we ranked UNCW at this point in the season -- and some of you might even say the Hawks should be one spot above.

Either way, check it out, and let us know what you think of the rankings.

Good luck the rest of the way!

The only thing more porous than UNCW's defense is William & Mary's. (Although UNCW's has dramatically improved as of late.) SYNERGY ranks W&M below the Hawks at #345 in the Nation giving up almost 1 point every possession. Incidentally, Northeastern comes in at #346 so feel free to adjust your rankings accordingly.

NU and William and Mary are the two most suspect in this poll, and Delaware is easily the most underrated.

UNCW beat Towson and JMU on the road, while the Tribe beat them at home, and UNCW's loss is to CofC while William and Mary lost to Delaware. If any team hasn't proven itself yet, it's the Tribe, not Delaware.

Despite close losses and potential, NU is still 1-2. Close losses are still losses, otherwise UNCW would have a great record right now, so we know this well. Delaware is 3-1 and has BEATEN both William and Mary AND Northeastern. Despite the huge loss to Hofstra, there is no way they should be behind William and Mary or NU.

1. Hofstra
2. CofC
3. Delaware
4. UNCW
5. William and Mary
6. Northeastern
7. JMU
8. Drexel
9. Towson
10. Elon

Right now, UNCW, William and Mary and NU have to prove they belong at the top, Hofstra, CofC and Delaware have proven themselves to be on top, and the rest have to prove they aren't bottom dwellers.

RE: CAA Basketball Power Rankings
I do not think we'd beat Northeastern right now, despite our recent wins and their recent struggles. They still have one of the top 2 coaches in this league. So they get the benefit of the doubt from me. Especially since their 2 losses are @ Hofstra and vs. Delaware, two solid teams. One of those losses was by 2 points in 2-OT, and the other was a 3-point loss in regulation.

It's also hard for me to put us over W&M either. They're 3-1 and also have a top-3 coach.

I'd go:

1. Hofstra
2. Charleston
3. Delaware
4. Northeastern
5. W&M
6. UNCW
7. JMU
8. Drexel
9. Towson
10. Elon

don't think it's hard to put us over W & M at this point based on body of work as 82 pointed out. I do agree with your take on NU in regards to the "quality losses"

I hear ya, I'm just trying to take off my teal goggles at the moment. Especially since the Tribe fan who posted this couldn't quite avoid the homerism for his own squad.

Our defense is still really bad (as you accurately pointed out in another thread using the SYNERGY system), so we need to prove ourselves against Delaware this Thursday night. If we do that, I'd vault us up several spots. We've also historically struggled against W&M. Hell, even Keatts had trouble with them.

Getting Ty Gadsden back is HUGE. Especially since he's our best on-ball defender. Once he shakes off the rust, our ceiling becomes really high. Like, contender for the CAA crown high.

All good man. You've earned a solid reputation already. Love, love, love what you've brought to the board man. I'm a huge fan of analytics (though I'm not always smart enough to get what they're saying), so all these new analytics that have come available for basketball are so cool to me, and its great that you've been able to give us so much insight from SYNERGY.

Keep it coming!

UNCW is definitely top 4 right now. NE will be there in the end. Delaware needs to prove that they are there as well as the Tribe. Tribe always runs a beautiful offense however ( do they have the Jimmy's and Joe's this year?-they lost that great shooter but I haven't followed them this year).

The thing is, this is a "what have you done for me lately" ranking, and it's put out weekly for that reason.

NU MAY beat UNCW, but their record isn't showing it to be the case yet. OTH, Delaware has show their capabilities with a 3-1 record with wins over NU and W&M. Additionally, William and Mary has one more win against an inferior team and their other wins are at home against the same teams we beat on the road. Also, our only loss is to CofC while they have a loss against Delaware, whom they CLAIM is a #7 team. Can't have it both ways.

RE: CAA Basketball Power Rankings
Cool of the WM sports blog to come drop their analysis off, but I'm with everyone else here. W&M is 2-3 spots too high as the "difficulty" of their wins in a home environment vs on the road causes some big time questioning. Power rankings should absolutely follow the "power of the win" in terms of opponent's power rankings, and the same for the losses.

Cool sports blog, but if they're looking for CAA wide credibility they need to at least try and look at the power rankings objectively, IMO.

I'm gonna echo SN08 here HAWKING... we defend and enjoy our own. You're a quality poster and with your flavor of analytics you'll quickly figure out who's who in the zoo around here. There's not an awful lot of us in comparison to a couple of the other active CAA boards. I'm pretty sure we all have really enjoyed your addition to our ranks!

Margin of victory needs to be taken into account, is all I'm saying.

NU shouldn't be punished heavily for losing close games to two strong teams. Especially since they were picked to be one of the top teams in the league this year (and rightfully so). Nothing they've done so far has warranted them falling out of the Top 4.

I am more willing to listen to the argument for UNCW being above W&M, however. 5/6 is where we should be right now. Beat Delaware and that changes things significantly for us.

Wait, is Delaware a strong team or aren't they? Maybe NU and William and Mary are pretenders and Delaware really isn't that good? This blog certainly dooesn't give Delaware any credit for beating NU and William and Mary.

If they are a strong team, they should be ranked ahead of NU and the Tribe and the loss doesn't mean much. If they are a weak team(as ranked), then William and Mary and NU should have beaten them and should be ranked lower. Either way, those three teams aren't ranked on reality but wishes and desires.

Well, they did lose to Hofstra by 46, UNCG by 19 and Navy by 15. And they've also lost to Stony Brook and Deleware State. Maybe they've turned things around. Guess we'll find out Thursday night.

RE: CAA Basketball Power Rankings
I don't see much separation at all in the top 5, but I haven't seen the Pride play yet this year. It will be interesting what people have in 2 weeks on this.

UNCW is getting better and have been better defensively since conference play has started. I believe that Alex stated that they were only allowing 39% FG against during that span. That's inflated a bit low due to the teams that UNCW played but it also speaks to the improved defensive play of the team. Some of the new guys have really helped in that regard the way it appears. Jaylen Sims has a chance to be really good defensively IMHO which would add to what the other newcomers like Ty and Kai are doing.
