Every time a recruit says I love the "family feel" of NIU, you know Rod is doing something right. I read about recruits saying that a lot. Stepping into the unknown is never easy for a low budget program like NIU.

They're going to roll snake eyes on a hire eventually. It's bound to happen. If Rod does indeed go, let's hope it's not now.

My personal list for his replacement if it comes to that:

1. Kevin Kane--think he's the obvious choice
2. Chip Long--not sure how realistic he would be
3. Matt Canada
4. Mike Lynch--Cuse OC

Other names:
Jim Leonhard
Tracey Claeys
Tuke
Matt Simon?

It would make sense for him in that way. Where it might not make sense is the job security part of it. At NIU, he is given full unchecked power and can do whatever he wants. At Temple, he might be evaluated by an athletic department. Im not sure what the numbers would be , but if its fat enough I think it would be smart for him to go.

The trajectory is downward? The last 4 years NIU has won 8, 5, 8, and 8 games. They’ve pretty much settled in as a good but not elite G5 program. I’m really not going to argue if that should be good enough or not, but the trajectory isn’t downward. They’re pretty consistent lol.

Canada did well at the helm of Maryland for his short fill in. If he has hc aspirations maybe he would come back? He probably makes more $ as a coordinator in the Big though.

I’m fairly sure Canada is unemployed right now.

Solid list of names. I can see the Kevin Kane thing happening. He would be a loaner type of coach - probably two or three seasons, but it makes a lot of sense. This would be back to the Doeren mold of hiring a young, on the rise coach knowing he probably isn't going to be here long.

Chip Long probably isn't happening - I agree with you. From Touchdown Jesus to 600 people at Huskie Stadium might be a little tough to swallow

Matt Canada - I think that ship has sailed. I don't see him coming back to DeKalb again.

Mike Lynch would be interesting.

Of your other names, I like Tracy Claeys the best. He is a guy that I think could take this job by the horns and might actually stay.
The issue with Claeys is how it ended at Minnesota. Not that NIU has any fans to begin with, but not sure hiring a coach accused of abusing players is the best PR look.

Totally with you on Kane though. If things go as planned he won’t be here long, but he checks all the boxes.

I don't believe Claeys was accused of abusing players, but I totally agree that hiring him would not be the best PR move. I think his deal was he supported his players who were boycotting football activities in defense of 10 teammates the administration suspended (and worse) over sexual assault allegations. It was a mess. In the Me Too Movement and with NIU recently hiring its first woman president in Lisa Freeman, I'd say its a long shot that Claeys would have a shot, which is fine by me. NIU doesn't need that kind of baggage with a new head football coach.

I like Matt Canada or Brock Spack at Illinois State.

Matt Canada may make more money as an OC, but I think if he's handed the reins to a solid program and can deliver some charisma to an otherwise dead fan base, then he can quickly leverage a better HC.

Brock Spack because of his ties to the area, his talent to win. Since 2009 at Illinois State he has had one losing season and gone to the FCS championship game as well.

ISU has gone 6-6, 6-5, 6-5 the last three years and hasn’t made the playoffs in the last two. I dont think he would be an awful hire, but he’s not exactly lighting it up the last few years.

Not sure if he would want to leave the Pros now or go to a smaller program after Oregon, but I wouldn't mind Mark Helfrich. He just bought a home in Lake Bluff to start the season for the bears though.

At least Brock Spack hasn't been losing POSTSEASON games! (Because he hasn't been playing in them...)

This is correct. He supported the players. He’s a good choice and would probably win. Not sure he’s want to leave Washington State though.

RE: Temple interested in Carey
The timing of this for Carey is bad. Most assistants that he might want to hire are already in other positions. Would be hard to recruit coaches this late in the offseason. Recruits can leave with a coaching change. Would really be hard to get the team rolling. I believe he could be successful but his ties are Midwest. Shifting to east coast would be tough. If they struggle in the first year or two, he’s probably gone since he wasn’t their first choice. I think he stays and puts together a few more good seasons. Then would be a first choice head coach for someone.

I would bet he takes most of the coaches with him.

Bruce Feldman reporting Wisconsin’s o-line coach interviewed for the job and was “impressive.”

We have our DC, LB coach, and STC in place. Our QBC (one of our top QBs in school history), RBC and WRC are still here too.

Sounds like it’s Carey, Creighton, and the Wisconsin OC

Carey & Creighton are the top 2 coaches in the MAC. Temple knows what they’re doing.

I would agree with this, but if these temple fans we’re pissed about Carey, I can only imagine how they’ll feel about 22-40 creighton lol

I’m a big fan, but when you have $10M to spend on a coaching staff, it’s not the best from an optics standpoint.

MAC teams haven’t exactly been bringing in a surplus of big time coaching talent in recent years and not sure NIU is in position to break the bank to land a game changer type. If one of the former “program” guys doesn’t want the gig, then what...

Football scoop is already reporting Canada wants the job. I guarantee Kane or Canada would accept if offered.
