Should be 12 team playoff...top 4 get first round byes, but they need to travel if their second round opponent has a better record. You can still use the current bowl structure, and just move first round playoffs into the lower 1st and upper 2nd-tier bowls. Agree that butts in the seats is the thing to push for, and if you have an opportunity to advance then you're going to get butts in the seats.

RE: What should be the G5 focus moving forward
Bowl games shouldn't have conference tie ins. There should be a hierarchy of bowls based on age. Each bowl takes a turn picking the teams they want to feature out of the whole group of bowl eligible teams. That way the more historic bowls will still most likely feature top 25 teams, but they have the option to choose a school closer by if they are looking to maximize attendance. Imagine if the Sugar Bowl picked Texas and then picked Texas A&M instead of UGA. This could even lead to more P5/G5 matchups in bowls. Imagine if the Belk Bowl chose USC and App State.

Assuming the playoffs stay at 4 or don't expand past 6, the bowl system should remain almost as it is.

If so, we should match the 4 G5 champions not in the Access Bowl against each other in 2 marquee bowl games. While we may not be able to receive a payout like the Access Bowl we should demand the visibility of a New Years day/eve game (or maybe the weekend before the Championship Game).

Quote:Push for a 16 team Playoff. 10 conference champs and 6 at large bids.

It's probably a pipe dream, but I don't see how this scenario wouldn't be ultra-exciting from the fans perspective.

Conference Championship games become all that more meaningful, you can have cinderella stories like basketball and baseball do that people love and drive ratings for the NCAA tournament in basketball, any team that has even an outside shot would be invited (does anyone really think Penn State could compete for a national title this year?), etc.

Unfortunately, conferences like the ACC, Big 12, and Pac 12 would likely hate this considering the only non-1 bid leagues this year would have been the SEC with 4 teams and the Big 10 with 3.

Have to admit it'd be fun though.

  • Northern Illinois (16)
  • UCF (8)
  • Washington (9)

  • Georgia (5)

  • App State (14)
  • Ohio State (6)

We can "demand" all we want, but we will get the scraps of what the P5's and ESPN WANT to give us. We have zero leverage and get the leftovers. Simple as that....

I understand our position. I could have said "place a high emphasis on" or "press hard for", but, my point would be the same. I believe that we have a better chance to achieve a better time slot in the bowl season with G5 champions playing each other than receiving an auto-bid to an expanded playoff.

We need to push for an 8 team playoff with an auto bid to the top G5 regardless of ranking.

I know it isn't perfect and we will always get the 8 seed but it doesn't matter. The fact you would actually have a small chance each year would be a game changer.

By doing that you effectively recreate FCS at this level, and no thanks to that.

This can’t be stated enough. I don’t think we fought so hard to get out of the FCS to willingly go back to what would basically be another FCS.

Are you ok with APP never having a chance to compete for a National Championship...as in NEVER? That's what you are saying. I think a G4 playoff (top four conference champs) with winner getting a NY6 Bowl would be a good middle ground. It would be a defacto Championship, but its at least something.

That's 3 post season games that the G5 champ would have to play through with the 3rd being against a fresh P5 team who has had a month's worth of prep time. That sounds like a worse deal for the G5 than what we have now.

Its one more post season game then is currently being played. Besides, who is better prepared? The team that sits on their ass for 5 weeks or the team that played 1 extra game between championship weekend and the NY6 cfp. It sounds like a way better deal to me for a G5.

I agree we need the Playoff to expand to at least 8. I don't know if we can get an auto-bid for the top G5 but I'd like to see it guaranteed that the top G5 will be included if they finish in the top 8.

To make that happen I think they need to do a composite poll and combine the AP poll, Coaches poll and use the average of the old BCS computers for the third poll and get rid of the committee all together. It would still have the human (eye test) factor but that would at least be balanced by cold hard numbers.

Top 16 teams would meet in a major bowl with the top 8 meeting in playoff bowls. The four winners from those could move on to meet in two Semi-Final Bowls and the two winners from that meet in the Championship game.

Championship game (7-10 days after the Semi-Finals)

Semi-Finals (7-10 days after New Years Day)
Orange Bowl
Fiesta Bowl

Quarter Finals (New Years Day)
Rose Bowl
Sugar Bowl
Cotton Bowl
Peach Bowl

* Semi-Final Bowls and Quarter Final Bowls would rotate from year to year

Teams Ranked 9-16 would be placed in the following Bowls (played on New Years Eve)
Sun Bowl
Gator Bowl
Citrus Bowl
Liberty Bowl

All other Bowls could remain as is but the NCAA would mandate to be officially sanctioned they would have to agree to play the contest prior to New Years Eve thus elevating the importance of the 8 NYE/NYD Bowl games.

The G5 team that goes to the access bowl would play in:
1 conference championship
1 semi-final game
1 final game
and then go on to the Access Bowl

Essentially you're making it harder for the G5 champion to make the Access Bowl for no reason while also exhausting the G5 athletes and extending the travel budget they would need to take part in this while nothing changes for the P5 team in the Access bowl who gets all that time to practice and heal any minor injuries on their roster that the G5 team doesn't get.

You missed a step. If you reread my post I advocated for getting rid of the conference championship game and replacing it with the first round of the G4 "playoff." Who would the Eagles rather play at home the first weekend of December, the MWC champ or a rematch with UL??? Considering your storied history in FCS, my guess is you would have folks sitting on top of each other on your endzone hills to experience a playoff type atmosphere again. No offense to UL, but playing conference mates gets old come December. Playing a different conferences champion with the winner getting one more potential home game would be a hell of a lot more entertaining.

Everybody on this board is advocating for a top G5 autobid to an eight team playoff which sounds great except for the fact that nobody in the Belt has even come close to sniffing that spot. App could have got it done on the field this year though and would have given UCF everything they wanted and more by winning the game.

Play the first round on conference championship weekend with the 2nd round the weekend after the Army/Navy game, highest ranked team host. IT sucks up a dead period for College football fans and will be the only game in town. Everyone is still eligible for a bowl regardless of loss with the losers and winners getting auto bids to certain bowls so that it doesn't hold up the rest of the bowl spots. (Winner to the NY6, loser to the Vegas bowl.) It would also end the conference championship games that are outdated now anyways. Whats not to like???

Yes. That’s exactly what I’m saying.

I don’t care much for “you know what you guys oughta do,” advice. Especially from a fan of a school that doesn’t play football.
