RE: Lots of unsold tickets to CFB Championship - Southerners don't travel
Just about any team will travel to any NY6-type bowl... ONCE. There aren't many fanbases big enough (or wealthy enough) to travel cross-country every year - especially to more than one NY6 bowl each year (as Clemson and Alabama have been doing).

No doubt the Southern teams got much of their bowl attendance reputations thanks to having local bowl venues, but I wouldn't say they are less likely to travel outside their own region, but probably about the same.

My take-away from all this is a deep respect for Ohio State fans, which seem to fill their part of the Rose Bowl - some 2,234 miles away! - year-in and year-out. (Of course, the Buckeyes only have to buy tickets to ONE bowl per year...)

Just set up a playoff system and put the garbage bowl system out of its misery. It's outdated. Most people don't give 2 shlts anymore about what the college game used to be about. It's NFL- lite. The players are not playing for the glory of the school - it's to get noticed and ranked for the NFL draft and free agent signings. We've long since crossed the Rubicon of college amateurism. Time to make the post season represent what the sport is really all about - crowning a champion and GAMBLING. Fantasy CFB is probably in the wings ready to take over. That will help in the long run.

It's just the opposite - the great bulk of sports fans who care about college football do so because of its traditions and rich history and heritage.

What they DON'T want is NFL-lite, which a pure playoff regime would create.

Well, Ohio State has only played in the Rose Bowl three times in the last 30 years, the last time before this year being 9 years ago. So it's not actually an annual thing.

But it is a very special thing, as generations of Ohio State fans grew up with the tradition that a trip to the Rose Bowl was the ultimate goal.

And it used to be allowed only every other year

Then these fans wouldn’t want any part of a 4 team playoff - which cheapens the traditionally big NYD bowls.

Are Southerners allowed to travel to Cali? Surprised Cali allows entry.

Californians have traditionally been pretty nasty. They segregated and tried to ban the Chinese and Japanese. They segregated the Mexicans. They tried to avoid the Okies.

Seems like they are trying to ban conservatives these days, so Southerners might not be far behind.04-cheers

Univ of Mexico City, if it exists, would be a hot ticket.

Looks like Levi's Stadium is pretty full tonight.

I'm hoping for a good game.

The NBA has historically been most popular when there have been dynasties.

Missouri said the same thing when UGA went there the first time for a regular season game, about 12,000 Georgia fans.

That was insane to see. Was it the aura of Notre Dame that drove so many people to South Bend? Once in a lifetime chance for most people.

Northwestern and Vanderbilt probably have it worst in terms of visiting fans. The Chicago area is the largest alumni population center for basically all Big Ten teams outside their home state, I'm sure Nashville has a lot of SEC alumni and it's driveable for most. Every now and then you even see G5 schools invade P5 teams, like NIU in 2014 or Miami in 2003 both against Northwestern (we brought nearly 10K to Ryan Field).

Are college basketball, baseball, hockey, etc. completely irrelevant because they have playoffs where all conference champs get an auto-bid?

Its Notre Dame stadium and the aura around that, not so much the ND football team.

The crowd was significantly larger than the PAC-12 title game which also took place on a work day. I’d say the two top teams in the south comfortably exceeding the crowd for the title game of the only P5 league in the west establishes that the southern teams traveled well.

One of the largest markets in the country with two NFL teams (right now), two MLB, NBA, NHL, and MLS, plus two P5 programs and a G5 and phenomenal number of major companies and a high median income ought to be able to sell such an event out with ease.
