It's upon us! Conference play is at the door and some leagues have already begun play. But there's a problem...no one is really noticing until football season is over.
I've said it before and if the Lord allows me to see another year then I'll say it again.
The postseason for college basketball works to a certain degree, but it could be better. The regular season is altogether broken and there are easy ways to fix both.
1. The Power leagues should be playing almost exclusively conference games during the regular season. I would suggest a double round-robin, but that does depend on the size of the league.
Conference games are the ones that fans care about most. Ticket sales and TV ratings would be up.
2. The NCAA Tournament should determine participants not by committee, but rather by your finish in the conference standings. This gives additional value to the regular season and takes away a large degree of subjectivity.
The biggest problem with the Tournament is not its size, it's how the teams are chosen. That in turn reduces the value of the regular season.
For example, the top 4 in your league should be the ones that qualify for the NCAA Tournament. I'll even compromise and say some of the lesser leagues should get a few more teams in as long as the number is capped at 64. Some leagues should only get 2 in though. Give the typically stronger leagues 4 bids and allow the conference race to determine who is good enough to get in.
