For decades, technical and vocational schools have been falling out of favor, as more and more people opt for getting advanced degrees at four-year colleges. But recently, with the job market over-promising and underpaying, the trend has begun to reverse: States have started to reinvest in trade schools. And the generation inheriting volatile job prospects, a gig economy, and contract pay is following suit.

Generation Z—those who were born between the mid-1990s and early 2000s—are more often turning to trade schools to avoid the skyrocketing student debt crisis and hone skills that translate directly into jobs, from electrical engineering to cosmetology. While the power of trade unions has dwindled, and societal value still favors more elite professions, young students are finding themselves drawn to stable paychecks in fields where there’s an obvious need.

According to the Washington Post in October, the student debt has reached a mindblowing $1.53 trillion. This debt shared by so many millennials has put them on the fast track to failure despite the fact that they hold masters degrees. They own now houses because they can’t afford to have one, and it doesn’t help that despite their expensive degree, they’re finding it difficult to get a decently paying job due to the fact that the job market is choked with an excess of graduates all trying to get the same career going.

The entire debacle has resulted in millennials living with their parents into their 30’s and being far worse off than their parents were at their age.

So ingrained is the idea of the importance of college in our culture to our prosperity that we’ve sidelined the very idea of skilled labor as a legitimate option, and even somewhat consider it beneath us.

Generation Z, however, is not making that mistake. As a result, more and more are moving away from the highrise office and looking more seriously at learning how to be an electrician or plumber.

Somewhere right now, Mike Rowe is smiling, as he’s been pushing this idea for some time now, and even has gone so far as to dismiss the importance of the University in the age of having every bit of knowledge you can ask for at your fingertips, including free college lectures you can find online.

For all intents and purposes, the U.S. should be considering this move by Gen Z as a wonderful, and smart idea. However, this move away from University is going to cause some serious problems for the left.

For the left, colleges and universities are where they can finally begin injecting their politics into your child and convincing them that the country they grew up in is an evil empire filled with greedy capitalists and racist right-wingers. Jordan Peterson explains it best in his Prager U video just how good these professors are at teaching youthful minds how to believe some of the foulest things.

On top of that, it’s the place where your child can accumulate crushing debt and acquire minimal prospects, making them support a statist system of government that promises to relieve them of their burdens if only they would support the politicians who seek to spread the wealth out enough for that to happen.

If Gen Z is turning it’s back on all of this, then you might actually start to see the edge the left currently has on the populace begin to dull. No more indoctrinated youths taking to sidewalks with picket signs and half-assed beliefs, fewer leftist voters blindly following orders, and no more student debt weighing on a populace in an already troubled economy greasing the wheels for socialistic beliefs.

Unless you're going to major in STEM, it's such a no brainer.

And even if you are, just like law students have learned, there comes a point where even those fields become saturated.

My 13 year old actually walked up to me a couple of days ago and said she wanted to do community college for two years and then go to college. I was so proud of her. Now, we'll see if that idea sticks but the fact that a 13 year old even was thinking in that way was surprising.

My son is a freshmen this year and he came to me with the Community College angle too. I never thought he paid any attention to me, but holy s**t was I wrong. If he keeps a GPA above 3.5 he can transfer to a number of local 4 year places tuition free....

1st semester 3.95!!!!!

Son #2 wants to go to the military get some skills then take GI bill to get a trade....


Same kids I was yelling at to stop eating bark only a few years ago......

Nothing wrong with trade school.

Community college is great for certain 4-year degree transfers but having lived it I would never recommend an engineering student do that route.

My daughter is a senior in HS right now and she ultimately chose a college where she will be able to commute - we're about 35 min away tops in the worst possible traffic. In order to save money, she'll commute to the main campus for engineering. I'm a little worried about her not living on campus and doing a hard core STEM major (chemical engineering); however, this is what she wants to do to start out. That plus having roughly $28K worth of scholarships lined up so far will greatly minimize her debt load. She wants to try her absolute hardest to pay for her schooling by herself.

Got lucky with this one wrt college at least.

GenZ appears to be a 'throwback' generation and elected to completely avoid the "progress" the millenials made with their "wokeness"...

There are still a sizable number of millenials who are conservative leaning though.

I don't know if your kid is a fan of pewdiepie, but I think he (and the whole subculture surrounding him) has a lot to do with it. The alt-left media is trying to label him as a nazi, and it's breaking these kids' conditioning. They know they are lying.

That's pretty much how my sons did it, but reversed.

My oldest had scholarship offers in high school to be an athletic trainer but decided after doing it for four years in high school the last thing he wanted to do was be an athletic trainer. Instead he enlisted in the army as a combat medic, earned his National Registry EMT-Basic ticket in AIT then had the Army not only allow him to attend the community college full time to get his National Registry EMT-Paramedic certification but the Army paid for half of it. He wisely saved his GI Bill by paying for his half of the community college costs out of pocket. Now he's out of the Army, is employed with a county EMS service nearby and is taking online courses thru Arizona State towards a degree in Emergency Management. With the national shortage of Paramedics as long as he keeps his certification he'll never have to look long for a job. Even with a full time position he is constantly fielding job offers from other 911 and non-emergency services.

My youngest is enrolled at the local technical college (our term for community college) working towards an Associates in Science. At this point he's not sure what he wants to major in so he didn't see how it made sense to pay out more money when he wasn't sure where he wanted to go. He's trending towards something in either forestry or parks management so he's applying for several apprenticeships this summer to get his feet wet and see if that's what he truly wants to do.

You just can't replicate the demands you'll face in a four-year school in most STEM fields at the community college level. The alternative is to take all your humanity electives at CC, but that could lead to STEM overload your junior/senior years.

My kids are getting the boot after the summer is over following HS graduation. What they do from their is their choice, but staying at home and commuting or going to community college will not be an option. I am a big believer of accumulating responsibilities to grow up. I'd rather they take a little longer and go at night while learning how to live within a budget and pay bills. Whether or not I am willing to pay for 4-year college depends on the child, their history, and their plans. Obviously, if my child has the makes of a neurosurgeon, I'm not going to screw that up, but s/he can also achieve that with a scholarship to ODU as opposed to $50k/year at Harvard. One thing I am not going to do if fund someone that has no vision or one with a grandiose vision that has achieved nothing. I guess what I am saying is I'll take it case by case, but the one consistent rule is you won't be living under my roof.
