WBB Game 13: Monarchs (9-3) @ Marshall (6-7), Con USA opener
This Thursday the Monarchs will start conference play on the road against the Marshall Thundering Herd. The Thundering Herd are in rebuild right now. Last season they elevated associate head coach Tony Kemper to head coach of the women’s basketball program. The team went 9-20 last season and 3-13 in Con USA. ODU and Marshall played one-time last season, in Norfolk, with ODU winning 69-53.

This season the team is 6-7 (6-2 at home). They have a current RPI rank of 309 and SOS of 322.
Vs Indiana State University L 53-62 Record: 5-5 RPI: 171
@ Bowling Green L 76-99 Record: 6-4 RPI: 154
@ Southern Illinois University L 49-58 Record: 7-4 RPI: 116
Vs Bluefield State College W 82-29 (Not a Division one team, does not count in RPI)
@ Appalachian State University L 52-74 Record: 6-5 RPI: 159
Vs University of Evansville W 72-65 OT Record: 2-9 RPI: 348
Vs Coppin State University W 88-67 Record: 0-13 RPI: 249
@ University of Wisconsin L 49-67 Record: 10-4 RPI: 130
Vs Cleveland State University W 86-64 Record: 3-8 RPI: 220
Vs Tennessee State University W 80-59 Record: 0-12 RPI: 291
@ Clemson University L 54-68 Record: 9-4 RPI 94
Vs Towson University L 69-76 Record: 6-5 RPI: 158
Vs Delaware State University W 75-63 Record: 0-9 RPI: 340
Vs ODU Record: 9-3 RPI: 35
So yes Marshall is 6-2 at home. However…and this is a big however..if you combine the records of the teams that they have played and BEAT at home…..5 wins – 51 loses . (Plus a non division one team)

Guard the outside. 39.2% of the team overall shots are from the outside. They average 7.7 three pointers a game, which would rank second in Con USA. Everyone one except post player Ashley Saintigene has attempted a three . Saintigene was a good player in her freshman year but then she got injured in her sophomore year. She is just starting to come back but still isn’t back to what she once was. The team’s leading scorer Gore has taken more threes than inside shots. The team overall is good at rebounding. The average of 43.8 rebounds per game ties ODU. Now yes they had 64 rebounds against the non-division one team that counts in their stats. But they can be aggressive on the boards. On defense, they like to trap and steal the ball. They lead the conference in blocked shots.

Ast/TO ratio:
Marshall: 0.9, ODU: 0.9

Last season the road was a weakness for the Monarchs This season they are 5-2 on the road. If you saw their last game against Coppin St you saw a team that supported each other. The bench cheered for their teammates when they drove to the basket or when they made a free throw. When you are on the road, that is the type of the chemistry that you need to have. The Monarchs have won four straight against Marshall and will look to make it five. Later this season, the Herd will return to the Ted.

What a disappointing loss by our ladies tonight. Tough to recover from a 14 point half time deficit. Marshall is average at best. Bad loss, but a learning experience.... Ugh.

Is Marshall paying ODU to lose?

What happened? Maggie Robinson didn’t play well or gather many minutes. But can’t lay the loss on her. This looked like a team loss. No one played well in 1st half.
