Not to mention the fear factor that has to be there from looking down a muzzle that looks as big as an oil can.

I never get enough target practice in with it since I have to take out a loan to buy more bullets.

How often do you carry the 229, found it too heavy to be an every day carry

not too often, I open carried it as a service weapon (I was an armed guard several years back)

but when I do carry I use a crossbreed holster...the suede leather is very comfy and it wears well with a good strong belt.

RE: What Is Your Handgun Preference
If I did own handguns they would be a SIG P226 TacOps which is too heavy and bulky for concealed carry but is a joy to shoot, a Glock 27 .40 caliber that I would have worn for years but would have ultimately shelved for something longer and more accurate, a M&P Shield 9mm that I wouldn't have even shot yet, a S&W .380 that I would use as a backup and a Walther PPQ 9mm that would be perfect for every day carry.

RE: What Is Your Handgun Preference
I see a few .40 carriers. I too liked the .40, until they improved the ballistics so much on the 9mm I decided to change over. Far less expensive per round and a hell of a lot less recoil. Plus I can load the 9's with more lead. Of all the handguns I own the PPQ is the most versatile and easiest to handle. I love it and the price was right. One of the reasons I don't carry my SIG is the weight of the .40's.

I would imagine having your attacker laughing at your shortcomings could be an effective defense.

Well that and hardly anyone truly attacks someone who pisses their pants, so there's that too!

As to the OP, does it matter so long as it is loaded, reliable, and you are comfortable with its operation?

That's all that really matters right there.

Loaded is the most important because without bullets a handgun is just a very short club.

Reliable is second because if a gun is going to fail it is going to fail when you need it the most.

Comfort with operation is often overlooked but a strong #3 because if you aren't comfortable with how the handgun (or any gun) operates you aren't going to practice. If you don't practice you aren't likely to function when the time comes to use it for real. I cringe when I hear people telling people who carry smaller caliber handguns to "Get a man's gun". If the smaller caliber gun is what they are comfortable with then it's the perfect gun for them. It's not a "one size fits all" style situation.

It really depends on where I’d be, and the circumstances involved, regarding which gun would be my preference.

For example, if the gun is for defending against a home invasion (i.e., someone attempting a forcible entry) then a pistol of any kind isn’t going to be my preferred choice. A tactical shotgun would always be preferable over any revolver or semi-automatic pistol I could own.

Yep.

Like a wise man told me once, a handgun is for carrying where a long gun is impractical and to use if you have to fight your way to your long gun.
