Not to mention the fear factor that has to be there from looking down a muzzle that looks as big as an oil can.

I never get enough target practice in with it since I have to take out a loan to buy more bullets.

How often do you carry the 229, found it too heavy to be an every day carry

not too often, I open carried it as a service weapon (I was an armed guard several years back)

but when I do carry I use a crossbreed holster...the suede leather is very comfy and it wears well with a good strong belt.

RE: What Is Your Handgun Preference
If I did own handguns they would be a SIG P226 TacOps which is too heavy and bulky for concealed carry but is a joy to shoot, a Glock 27 .40 caliber that I would have worn for years but would have ultimately shelved for something longer and more accurate, a M&P Shield 9mm that I wouldn't have even shot yet, a S&W .380 that I would use as a backup and a Walther PPQ 9mm that would be perfect for every day carry.

RE: What Is Your Handgun Preference
I see a few .40 carriers. I too liked the .40, until they improved the ballistics so much on the 9mm I decided to change over. Far less expensive per round and a hell of a lot less recoil. Plus I can load the 9's with more lead. Of all the handguns I own the PPQ is the most versatile and easiest to handle. I love it and the price was right. One of the reasons I don't carry my SIG is the weight of the .40's.

I would imagine having your attacker laughing at your shortcomings could be an effective defense.

Well that and hardly anyone truly attacks someone who pisses their pants, so there's that too!

As to the OP, does it matter so long as it is loaded, reliable, and you are comfortable with its operation?

That's all that really matters right there.

Loaded is the most important because without bullets a handgun is just a very short club.

Reliable is second because if a gun is going to fail it is going to fail when you need it the most.

Comfort with operation is often overlooked but a strong #3 because if you aren't comfortable with how the handgun (or any gun) operates you aren't going to practice. If you don't practice you aren't likely to function when the time comes to use it for real. I cringe when I hear people telling people who carry smaller caliber handguns to "Get a man's gun". If the smaller caliber gun is what they are comfortable with then it's the perfect gun for them. It's not a "one size fits all" style situation.

RE: What Is Your Handgun Preference
It really depends on where I’d be, and the circumstances involved, regarding which gun would be my preference.

For example, if the gun is for defending against a home invasion (i.e., someone attempting a forcible entry) then a pistol of any kind isn’t going to be my preferred choice. A tactical shotgun would always be preferable over any revolver or semi-automatic pistol I could own.

Yep.

Like a wise man told me once, a handgun is for carrying where a long gun is impractical and to use if you have to fight your way to your long gun.

Well sure

My bullpup is my home defense weapon.

Just curious what folks in these parts conceal and carry

I'm strongly considering getting my CCW but I would rarely carry.. It would be for those times I'm headed to camp to check on some things and to be used if I saw a coyote or a bear..

Careful there! Dad had a bud who lost his arm because he thought he could defend himself against a bear with his service weapon. In those days it was a S&W model 10. He lost his left arm and almost bled out before a thrice wounded bear abandoned him.

If you're going to fend off a bear I wouldn't try it with anything smaller than a .45 ACP. 2300lbs of ft. pressure at impact at least gets the bear's attention. And hitting a coyote with a handgun is a tough task. You at least need a carbine with open sights so you can lead them, or a varmint rifle like a 25/06 which is fast and flat and fatal.

In my area the most dangerous thing in the woods are wild hogs. A .45 only works as a coup de grace if you can get close enough. The perfect weapon for hogs is the 7.62. It penetrates and the only response you usually get is a grunt. Unfortunately, it's not a great dear round (drops too fast after 100yds) so unless you are just going after the hogs it isn't practical to carry into the woods.

I'm not actively hunting them with that.. I have long rifles for that.. It'll be a fight or flight thing.

.40 cal with high expansion rounds should be fine for what you want. You aren't dealing with grizzlies. I killed a 215lbs wold hog sow with my Hi-Point .40 FWIW.

Well the one that took the arm of my Dad's friend was a Griz and they weren't hunting them. They were hunting deer and he was surprised by one who had cubs in the area.

With wild hogs you can kill them with most high powered rifles, and I could take one down with a 45. The problem is precision on a boar since they carry a naturally thick hide that protects their sides. The most effective round was the 7.62 for that reason. And the largest boar I took was 385 lbs field dressed. It was 6'2' from snout to rump and the tusks out of the mouth were 11'. He was a bad boy! And I carried the soma of his aroma home that night all over my clothes. I dressed it in 17 degree weather. We put him into sausage and gave it to the homeless. As sausage mixed with deer meat it was pretty good but a hog that big isn't very good butchered.

Black bear can get up to over 400lbs pretty easily and they actually account for more attacks on people than grizzlies or polar bear, but mostly because of sharing habitat. A good side arm is essential, but if I had to take a shot at one in defense I would prefer a carbine of some kind.

To each his own Kap. When the .40 was developed for the Delta Elite it proved capable enough.

I had an old friend of mine was a DI at Paris Island that was the real stud when it came to wild hogs. He hunted them with a single shot Thompson Contender (44 magnum) and a big Bowie Knife, and usually had a hand hewn sharp short pole with him (a pike). But then when was 60 he still ran his 10K every morning, still did his 100 push ups and sit ups, and could run circles around anyone I knew at the time 20 years his younger. But the best thing about him was if he told you something it was 100% dead on accurate. He never embellished, and he never lied. And if you lied to him once, as several I knew did, he was done with you forever.

We need more of his kind!

Yeah, where's he's talking about there's not any Grizzly Bears so a .40cal with high expansion rounds should do the trick.

For example, if the gun is for defending against a home invasion (i.e., someone attempting a forcible entry) then a pistol of any kind isn’t going to be my preferred choice. A tactical shotgun would always be preferable over any revolver or semi-automatic pistol I could own.
Well sure

My bullpup is my home defense weapon.

Just curious what folks in these parts conceal and carry

I'm strongly considering getting my CCW but I would rarely carry.. It would be for those times I'm headed to camp to check on some things and to be used if I saw a coyote or a bear..

I might think about carrying something other than a pistol for those.
