Mature and classy tweet from Marquis:

"New year ain’t start so great for me after finding out I’ll be the rest of the season, but smiles to a new year of growth while I bounce back from this set back. Appreciate the love from y’all from my good start to the season. Year 3 otw."

It also is a tough situation for the rest of our team. Hopefully they've had sufficient time to work on alternate combinations for our coming games.

Wow, this sucks....

I was doing some quick maths and it doesn't feel good at all.

Caver: 36.4 --> 38.4 = 2 min
BJ: 32.2 --> 36.2 = 4 min
Green: 29.0 --> 36 = 7 min
Wade: 16.9 --> 20.9 = 4 min
Kithcart: 13.6 --> 18.6 = 5 min

Total = 22

I think Wade might can handle 26 or 27 minutes if he keeps his head on.

Jones might can go with a slightly bigger lineup at times with Ezikpe starting to get about 8 or 9 minutes a game, 12, 12, and 13 against Cuse, Fairfield, and Morgan St respectively?

Yeah. The issue with Wade (and it's really not an issue) is he has only been averaging 3 points during his 17 minutes of play. That's a lot to ask to replace Godwin's 7 points per game. Maybe Giles can break it down further, but while 7 points per game might not sound all that much, with our style of offense it is quite a lot to make up. We are really going to need Green to turn into a monster right now.

Doesn't help that BJ is still not 100%.

Kithcart can do it.

So question now is - can he have a medical redshirt? How does that work/what are the rules?

Curious as well, but given the regular season is 42% over, I doubt that is an option.

I would think it's a longshot but since he didn't redshirt as a true freshman there may be a slight chance.

Wade: 16.9 --> 20.9 = 4 min
Kithcart: 13.6 --> 18.6 = 5 min

Total = 22

Actual numbers from the last two games:

Caver: 40 and 38 = average 39 (+2.6 min from previous avg)
BJ: 39 and 38 = 38.5 (+6.3)
Green: 32 and 32 = 32 (+3)
Wade: 23 and 25 = 24 (+7.1)
Kithcart: 9 and 21 = 15 (+1.4)

Sum of those (+x) numbers equals 20.4, so it looks like 2 of Godwin's minutes moved over to a combination of the 4/5 spot.

So Wade got more minutes than I predicted, and Green had fewer minutes than predicted. I know BJ is more than capable of playing at or near 40 minutes, I was just hoping we wouldn't have to. I don't think that will be the formula for success in a 3 or 4 day tournament.

IMO, success in a three day tournament is to win the first game and get to the next one. No matter what it takes to get there! We have lots of options, like running Kithcart at point for a couple minutes here and there and moving Caver to two guard for spells . Assuming we have Carver back, we can go eight, nine deep with some good players, not too worried about too much playing time myself. I wonder how often Elmore comes out? I think I remember Bassey playing 38 minutes the other night? Plus, with all the flipping TV timeouts they have, minutes played is overrated, imo. Foul trouble is a bigger worry associated with more playing time, imo.

RE: Godwin Injured
I am not worried about replacing Godwin's minutes but I am worried about replacing his production. Godwin was really coming on and we need all the offense we can get. It was apparent in both games this weekend. 66 points against that Marshall team is not much to write home about, however I will admit the 69 points against WKY in the last 30 minutes of the game basically was pretty good. Hopefully as some of the guys pick up more minutes ( Kithcart, Ezikpe, Dickens) it will translate to more PPG and help cover the deficit that losing Godwin created. My guess is that last play of the game against Marshall would have been designed for Godwin to take that shot. Not saying the outcome would have been different but his catch and release is what they had been working on. He was only going to get better as the season progressed.

Maybe for most players with some game time experience. Kalu pulled himself out a couple times from fatigue. But that'll go away with more time in the game. I saw him at least once looking at Jones asking to come out and Jones sent in Dickens. I kind of expect that going against a Bassey that hard, that guy was a specimen and Kalu kept him mostly in check when he was in. I think he and Wade should have been players of the game. BJ and Caver had points and hit clutch shots at the end but the young guns are what took it over at 12 minutes in the 1st.

Kalu is going to be a special player at ODU. As excited as I am about Wade, I think Kalu's upside is off the charts. Wait till he gets the confidence to step out and hit some outside shots.

Think Odel Hodge. With an off year of strength and conditioning, and continue improving his offensive game he is going to be dominating

Kalu has the athleticism already to be a productive player inside. He's been working hard on expanding his outside game for a couple years. He can hit from outside, but it's not really built into our system yet.

After watching him play 1 game in high school, I was amazed that we would even have a chance to get him. He's a stud.

EBM, did you say Odell Hodge? The hardest workin Monarch EVER ! I too love Kalu, hope you are right. He sure looks like he has some serious ability.

The main difference was Odell was fully ready from day ONE. Hodge average 15 points, 2.5 blocks, 56% shooting and 9 rebounds his FIRST YEAR. PS, two time CAA player of the year, (FYI, for you youngsters)

Im not sure how old Ezikpe is, but Hodge was almost 20 when he suited up for us in his first season.

Kalu needs a year of strength training to catch up to Odell. They have the same size and body types. Hodge dominated on defense with his size and strength. Kalu already has great hands and feet movement. Love that reverse layup put back he does after offensive rebounds

Agree. Love both of those guys. They have tons of talent, but their confidence, energy and passion is what really stands out to me. We haven't seen guys who approach the game the way they do in a long time. One of the things I have hated most about JJ's teams is the lack of passion and energy. These guys really turn it up when they are on the floor.

Exactly, Hodge is the first guy I thought of when I saw Kalu this summer at the MBB golf tournament. Their size is almost identical as freshmen. At that golf tournament, coach Jefferson was telling us that Kalu could really shoot the ball.
