Players that sit out of bowls
How do you feel?

I have very mixed feelings. Coaches that take new jobs like Lyin Brian leave their team in a lurch, so why should not players?

On the other hand deserting your team mates is pretty low. The NCAA could provide a loan fund that players could use to buy injury insurance.

But if a player skips the bowl the moment he makes that decision I hope the school stop all support such as room board tuition, etc.

RE: Players that sit out of bowls
I think it is ok for a senior who is a true NFL prospect to sit out to protect himself from a possible injury that would impact his draft status or worse a career ending injury. That player's teammates I'm sure are disappointed but would understand and want the teammate to do what was best for them.

I do agree that opting out of the bowl game is ending their college career and because of that financial support from the university should end.

More power to them. Bowl games have always been exhibitions to reward good seasons. In a cash grab they've expanded so now it's just a reward for not sucking. If someone wants to finish up with their team I respect that but for a lot of these guys playing in these exhibitions is an unnecessary risk for those with certain NFL futures. I would never criticize a player for making a decision they feel like is best for them.

All the non playoff bowl games are meaningless, so why risk a seven figure payday. If we had a legit 16 team playoff this wouldn't be an issue.

I'm totally ok with it.

That said, we may all have some feels next season if, Mr. Wiggins, does the same. lol

Nevertheless, it seems like a sensible business decision.

I enjoy watching us play in our bowl games but they mean far less to me than regular season games trying to win our conference championship. Assuming we're not in a playoff game I support any of our players who make that decision.

I'm OK with it.

However, they need to refund 1/13th of the value of their scholarship for the year.

RE: Players that sit out of bowls
Leaving your team before the final game is classless IMO... and that goes double for coaches. I think the NCAA should absolutely prohibit coaches leaving one school for another during the season. I don't even think schools should be allowed to interview the coach of another NCAA team before their season ends.

If a player wants to leave early to prevent injury and guarantee their millions of dollars, I get it... I think it's selfish, but I get it. But if you make that decision, you should immediately lose all benefits of your scholarship: dorm, cash stipend, access to training facilities, and any grades from classes still in progress (in other words, if you quit the team 2 weeks before final exams, you don't get the chance to finish that semester). I think that's totally fair.

Completely reasonable. More bothered by the way they get ripped for it than anything. Sitting out an exhibition game to protect your financial future is just not a big deal.

I selfishly want all of uc's guys to play but wouldn't be upset if they were going to be drafted and wanted to protect themselves

They would still sit out. Same money is at stake.

I just don't think winning the Gaspirilla Bowl is that important. Launching a successful NFL career has a greater impact on the program than a bowl win.

NCAA has made it all about the money, so I’m ok with the players doing the same. I’m not going to tell these guys how to spend their money.

Players that sit out of bowls
If there were any honor in college football, I'd say the players need to hold to their commitment, but with this being a massive money grab anyways with coaches bolting early and only ten or so teams being seriously considered for the championship it's hard to fault the players for not wanting to kaibosh a pay day that has resulted from all of the hard work they've already put in with that University.

Stop support such as room and board, tuition, etc...? 03-lmfao

All these guys have already signed with agents by the time the next semester starts and are busy prepping for the combine and buying new cars with advances from said agents. None of them are returning to class and hanging in the dorms.

Cancel scholarships and room and board? The vindictiveness of some of you guys is shameful. It also reveals that you view the relationship as transactional, so it's all the more reason we should get over the amateurism farce.

There's no question at all that pro prospects should sit out. It's the only rational decision. It's reckless to risk millions for the glory of winning the freaking Fiesta Bowl. The kid a couple years ago from Notre Dame, Jaylon Smith, lost about $20 mil. when he blew out his knee in a bowl and then dropped from the top pick to a second rounder. So dumb. If coaches actually cared about these kids' futures they would hold them out.

100% pro player in these instances. Coaches show no loyalty when it's time to jump ship for a better job and those same coaches and administrators are making millions. As much money as the NCAA and its institutions make, they can shell out for big-time insurance policies for these players if they really want them to risk millions in meaningless exhibition games.

I actually agree with this, but why play the rest of the season? If one's prospects are that good, sit out the last FEW games.

But, I agree with Bruce's comment - a per capita scholarship refund based on the number of games missed.

I actually wish Mickens had left a year early. Might have had a great pro career.

RE: Players that sit out of bowls
If bowl games are important, why was one able to be cancelled as a "no contest" this year?

Bowl games are rewards (to the players and to alumni/supporters). If a handful of the top players in the country choose to not partake in these rewards, I do not have a problem with it.
