2018 UC team of the year, sportsman of the year.
With 2018 in the rear view, I thought it would be interesting to look back at UC sports.

In my view the team of the year is the 2018 UC football team, not only for UC but for the entire city. They were the only Cincinnati sports team to far outpace expectations, the only team to win their last game of the season that resulted in championship. They started the year winning at the Rose Bowl on ESPN to beat UCLA which set the tone for the year. Along the way they came back for a 21 point hole to beat a very good in state rival, entered the top 25, played in the featured game on college game day, and became the only UC team to have 11 wins or more that included a bowl victory.

The runner up for this spot was the 2017-2018 basketball team. The outright conference championship and conference tournament championship were huge moments. The record 31 wins, poll and computers rankings showed a dominant team. The only blemish was the NCAA tournament collapse which keeps them off the top spot.

Also considered: UC women's volleyball. NCAA tournament team. Top women's sport.

For the city: 1530 named FCC as sportsman/team of the year. I disagree with that assessment but I would keep them in the top three with UC football and UC basketball for the past year.

Sportsman of the year, this is more difficult for me as it comes down to three guys. Warren, Clark, or Fickell.

Warren set the school record for touchdowns and was named the Military Bowl MVP. He put the team on his back from game one and carried them the entire season.

Clark swept the AAC awards, fought his way to an NBA contract, and represents everything good about Bearcat athletics.

Fickell was named conference coach of the year but more importantly saved UC football from the downward spiral. His early season QB change and gutsy calls helped build a winning culture that resulted in 11 wins. The season will do down as one of the all time great UC football season and maybe its most important one.

My pick is Michael Warren II but almost wish I could say all three.

In agreement, from 4-8 to 11-2 and I like Warren also.

No offense to Fick or Warren but Gary was the conference player of the year on a top 5 team. And is a better man off the court than he is a player on the court. If there were a Bearcat athlete of the year award he's the clear choice in my opinion. That would probably apply to all Cincinnati sports as neither professional team had positive years.

I have to say Gary Clark... but the award is Mike Warren's for the taking the next couple years.

If there is an Inspirational POY award I’d pick Garrett Campbell. 6th year guy who battled injuries over the years, including a broken leg this year. The fact he made it back after 5 games is simply amazing.

Also great guy who also spent a lot of time at Children’s Hospital. If football is not in his cards he wants to go to Medical School.

Smartest athlete of the year is Kyle Trout - his wife is a med school student.

Trout had a rough bowl game, 3 false starts. Overall though, a very solid year.

In the calendar year of 2018, the MBB and football teams combined for a 41-7 record. I can't think of any other school doing that in my memory, so I would nominate both as a single unit.

For sportsmen of the year, I would put up the seniors of both teams. Without their leadership, none of this would have happened.

The piece Jason Williams did in The Athletic about Campbell and his mother/family was an incredible read and a great profile on the person inside the jersey.

I remember Chad pointing out that number which is just incredible. It also included three championship. We tend to focus a lot more on those 7 loses a lot more than we do all those wins which is just crazy. Honestly the only thing missing in UC sports over the last thirty years is that crowning achievement. A national championship in basketball and a major bowl win. UC sports have really become a consistent winner since 1990s.
