The last D1 basketball game of 2018 will be Cal State Bakersfield at #7 Gonzaga tonight.

WAC play starts on Thursday except for UT Rio Grande Valley which plays at UC Irvine.

Big weekend for GCU out of the gate with games against UVU and Seattle in the first week. Hopefully the Lopes play better than they have been otherwise they will be 0-2 to start conference.

When will Michael Finke return to the GCU line up?

RE: WAC basketball week 9
It will be fun to see NMSU in Riverside to play CBU this week. CBU will have their hands full with the Aggies on Thursday Night, but CBU can counter with the best player in the conference to this point. Guard Milan Acquaah is leading the WAC in scoring at 22.2 per game, he is 8th in assists per game, 3rd in steals per game, 3rd in three point field goal percentage, 6th in free throw percentage, 12th in rebounding and 16th in field goal percentage. Anyway, it should be a fun game.

Acquaah is probably the most productive player in the WAC. But, I'm not sure he is the "best" player. CBU relies on Acquaah to shoulder a heavy scoring load. On the other hand, NMSU has a wealth of depth which keeps everyone's numbers down. There is also an argument for Seattle's Myles Carter being the "best" player in the WAC currently. He is 5th in the WAC in scoring (15.2 ppg), 1st in rebounding (8.5 rpg), 4th in FG% (0.605), and 1st in blocks (2.5 bpg).

I hope soon. It confused me why he had the boot on against San Diego when he was on the bench because he didn’t have it on when he was home for Christmas.

RE: WAC basketball week 9
I’m kinda glad we start off against CBU. I like them a lot and am really glad they joined the WAC. They have made an impressive move up to D1, as I suspected they would. But I’d like to send them a “welcome to the WAC” message from the kings of the hill.

CSUB is down 19 points at the half to the Zags. The Roadrunners play good defense but the can't generate enough points to stay in the game. Durham still has bad shot selection.

Finke looked just fine without the boot in pics of him getting on a knee to propose during break. Maybe plantar fasciitis isn't as debilitating as it seems.

I would agree that NMSU has a deep roster, but let's face it, no one on the NMSU roster is close to what Acquaah is doing to this point. We will see what happens in conference. Acquaah is getting a lot of help. CBU is leading the conference in scoring, rebounding, free throw shooting and is second in three point field goal shooting. Conference play will test them. I am not sure they can keep that up in conference play.

Carter is a good player. His rebounding, scoring and shot blocking are good. But his game still needs a lot of work. He has 10 assists and 37 turnovers in 15 games. He is shooting 54% from the free throw line and he needs to cut down on the fouls.

One player isn't going to beat NMSU. He could be the best player on the court, but NMSU depth, and our strong defense is going to cause a lot of problems for Acquaah and the Cal Baptist basketball team.

Actually, whether you realize it or not, you are not just stating an opinion. You are making an inference that Bobcat did not make. Your response here makes it look like Bobcat said CBU was going to beat NMSU and he did not say that. There is a difference between just stating an opinion and making an inference on something that was not said.
My apologies in advance if my post offends anyone. It just seems like our culture is going crazy with people saying they are just "stating an opinion" when they are actually doing more than that.

He made a comment about the CBU player being better than ever player on the NMSU roster. My opinion was that was fine because one player can't beat NMSU by themselves.

What I said was, I would agree that NMSU has a deep roster, but let's face it, no one on the NMSU roster is close to what Acquaah is doing to this point. We will see what happens in conference.

I did not say that Acquaah was better than every player on NMSU. I did not say that CBU was better than NMSU or will beat NMSU when they play tonight. At this point, the leading scorer on the NMSU basketball team is Ivan Aurrecoechea. He is averaging 11.8 points per game, which is 15th in the WAC. Acquaah is averaging 22.2 points per game and won a road game at Oral Roberts with a half-court shot.

There are five players for NMSU that are averaging between 11.8 and 9.4 points per game. They have balanced scoring, but there is no one like Zach Lofton or Jemerrio Jones or Pascal Siakam or even an Ian Baker. A.J. Harris was a preseason first team pick in the WAC, but he is not playing like a first team pick. Just based on non-conference games, there is no player from NMSU that would make the first team. That could change in conference play. Last season, Alessandro Lever of GCU made the WAC first team based on his conference numbers.

New Mexico State usually has the best player on the best team. They may still have the best team, but at this point in time they do not have the best player. Let's see what happens in conference play.

I agree with everything you've stated. One nit, Harris is absolutely our most critical player. He may not have the stats for a first team selection, but he is just as valuable or more for our team than any player on any other team.

RE: WAC basketball week 9
Would just like to say that Cal Baptist Strength of Schedule is abysmal (Not uncommon for new teams) and if you look per minute Aurrecoechea who is somehow 23 and a JR has been more efficient while on court. Acquaah is a solid player but lets see when the other teams Defense Efficiency increases will his production decline. Good luck Cal Baptist
