Yes he has a good thing going at Virginia, but the potential at UCLA is much higher, and so is the money. So it had to be the coaching environment issue as Wedge noted.

Sean Miller is not going to last at Arizona. It is just taking awhile for the school to get the courage up to part ways. They are so scared of losing what looks like a top 3 in the Nation recruiting class that they are paralyzed. It would not shock me if the waited until the bulk of the class enrolled before finally terminating Miller. But the NCAA is going to smash them much harder if they don't start taking action and self penalizing. This is death penalty worthy if they fight much more.

actually if they fire him prior to start of fall classes, they just changed the rules to allow for guys like that to be able to transfer w/o having to sit out a season....

That's a good rule change.

As for Virginia, it's a question of sustaining. They just don't get the NBA lottery picks. This is why UCLA offered to double his salary. Bennett might be on a Brad Stevens path however, NBA future.

Crean was hired more than 8 years after Knight was fired. Archie Miller was hired 17 years after Knight was fired. Both were/are under .500 in conference.

UCLA also fired a head coach (Harrick) who won a national title. The coach who immediately succeeded him (Lavin) went to 4 sweet 16s in 6 seasons. The issue at UCLA is that they have boosters who think that's not good enough, so they fired Lavin, and then fired the next guy (Howland) who went to 3 straight final fours. The fact that the boosters are way too quick to put the coach on the hot seat (and the administrators are too weak to calm down the angry boosters) is why A-list coaches like Wright won't go there even if you double his salary.

The UCLA boosters and alumni are not having coaches fired. Harrick was fired because he lied about an expense report, and it wasn't his first lie. Howland was fired because he was not well-liked. AAU coaches in Southern California did not like him, which was effecting recruiting. The athletic administration did not like him. The players did like him. He wore out his welcome. Lavin, on the other hand, was well-liked by the players, but they did not think he was a good coach. He was a used car salesman. He was a part-time assistant that got elevated to head coach due to Harrick's firing. Alford was a bad fit. He never embraced UCLA and they never embraced him.

The difference between Indiana and UCLA is the talent never stops rolling into Westwood. No matter who is coaching at UCLA, the talent keeps coming. The coaching has been better at Indiana. On Bobby Knight's last championship team, 1986-1987, Knight had Dean Garrett, Alford and Keith Smart. These guys were good college players, second round picks in the NBA, with short NBA careers. Knight got the most out of that team. The 1986-1987 UCLA team, on the other hand, was led by Reggie Miller and Pooh Richardson, both NBA first round picks. Miller is in the NBA Hall of Fame and Richardson had a ten year career as an NBA point guard. That UCLA team lost to Wyoming in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament. They beat #1 ranked North Carolina early in the season, but in typical UCLA fashion they played to the level of their opponent. That team was coached by Walt Hazzard, who once described his defense to a reporter as a "diamond and two" defense. That became a running joke in Southern California.

I cannot see why a Jay Wright or a Tony Bennett or a Tom Izzo would leave where they are at to come to UCLA. They don't need the headache and they have it made where they are at. Mick Cronin was a good choice, they should have started and ended the search there.

You say it's not the UCLA boosters' fault. But the last 4 coaches were fired. The reasons: "he lied," "not well-liked," "not.... a good coach," and "a bad fit." These are guys who went to the Sweet 16 more often than not, and two of them went to multiple Final Fours.

If a woman's been divorced once, sure, it might have been the husband's fault.
If a woman's been divorced four times, she should look in the mirror.

Nice to see that the Lakers have joined St John's and UCLA as the most disfunctional coaching searches of the 2019 off season....

If a woman's been divorced four times, she should look in the mirror.

The woman is probably making some bad decisions. That would be the UCLA Athletic Administration:

1. Jim Harrick - Fired the Head coach that won a national championship. This was not a decision supported by the Boosters. This is a breakup that you end up regretting.

2. Steve Lavin - Promoted a 32 year old assistant with no previous head coaching experience. He could recruit, he could talk, he just was not much of a coach. They ended up firing him after a 10-19 season, their first losing season in 55 years. The package on the outside looked good, but inside it was just an empty suit.

3. Ben Howland - The UCLA Athletic Administration made a good choice with Howland and he had a lot of success. Howland won the conference championship in his last season. This is one of those breakups that occurs when you are just tired of each other. The UCLA Athletic Administration had enough of Howland.

4. Steve Alford - An unpopular choice with almost everyone. The Boosters, the media, UCLA educators. Alford had a horrific press opening conference and it never got better after that. He never embraced UCLA and they never embraced him. This is a relationship that lasted much longer than it should have. This is a marriage that should never have happened.

In every case, it was the UCLA Athletic Administration that made a bad decision to fire or hire.

NAU connection to UCLA's coaches:

The dagger that doomed Lavin's last season was a defeat by NAU at Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins went on to be 0-5 vs Arizona teams in the regular season.

The next coach was Ben Howland, who's first head coaching job, and rise to prominence was at NAU.

I did not expect that. Puts Michigan in a tough spot. He’s irreplaceable.

Surprised he is leaving Michigan. Got to think Michigan will go after the butler coach who can than hire Thad matta if he is healthy enough. On second thought, maybe Michigan should offer billy Donovan big money

What a surprising turn of events. I never in a million years thought John Beilein would ever dip into the NBA waters; he's coached at the college level since 1978 (Erie) - and has won everywhere he has coached. However, coaching professional athletes is a whole different type of coaching. If you look at the recent prior coaches who have jumped from college into the NBA (Donovan, Stevens, Hoiberg, Calipari, Pitino, Kruger, Hamilton, Floyd, Montgomery, Dunlap, Carlesimo, Theus), the failure rate is much higher than than the successful ones. Heck, the shelf-life for an NBA head coach with a team is not longer than a handful of years. Beilein could have had the Michigan job for another 6-8 years, if he wanted it.

Would be shocked if Michigan didn't just promote Luke Yaklich to HC.

I don't think anyone saw this coming. This will be a great move for Beilein if Cleveland wins the lottery and lands Zion. Otherwise, it could end up similar to Rick Pitino in Boston missing out on Tim Duncan. If Michigan does not promote from within, some school out there is going to lose a very good head coach.

They should. Donovan has been rumored to be on the way out at OKC. He has one year left on his contract, and the GM purposely avoided the question of whether Donovan would be back next season. I suggested awhile back in this thread that he would take the Arizona job if they finally get around to letting Sean Miller go. Donovan should be at the top of Michigan's list if he's interested.

RE: 2019 MBB Coaching Carousel
There are only a select few who can probably control their own destiny and reconcile the current pro path to the NBA and their respective programs. Beilein may not be one of them in the same way Izzo is, or guys like Wright and Few are in their worlds, let alone what someone like Coach K and Pitino are, but it's mere semantics.

I think this is a guy who got close enough to the mountain top after the last two seasons and felt sustaining that level, with the added pressures of talent flow between the recruits and the pro game is one that is just no longer interesting to him.

Any program with a player's coach should be worried now. Because that's the role at the pro level...managing personalities, with mixing and matching rotations and combinations. It's getting to that at the college level, too much so, it seems, that if the money and security isn't there, but the workload eclipses the two levels, which it does...Beilein won't be the last.
